JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher – Special

REPORTS TO: Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, including, but not limited to:

  • Working under the reasonable direction of the principal of the school.
  • Working under a board with reasonable direction of the board and principal of any school where required.
  • Carrying out particular duties assigned by the principal in accordance with any reasonable direction.
  • Carrying out particular duties assigned by the board or principal where applicable.

PLANNING AND TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • 1.1 Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  • 1.2 Teaching pupils in accordance with their educational needs, including setting and marking work to be carried out by pupils in school and elsewhere.
  • 1.3 Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • 2.1 Promoting the general progress and well‑being of pupils and any class or group assigned to the teacher.
  • 2.2 Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers.
  • 2.3 Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils, except where such reporting may compromise the teacher’s position.
  • 2.4 Communicating and consulting with parents of pupils.
  • 2.5 Communicating and co‑operating with external persons or bodies approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors.
  • 2.6 Participating in meetings arranged for the above purposes.

ASSESSMENT/REPORTING

  • Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils and groups, except where such assessment might compromise the teacher’s position.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT / PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • 4.1 Participating, if required, in any scheme of staff development and performance review.
  • 4.2 Reviewing from time to time methods of teaching and programmes of work.
  • 4.3 Participating in arrangements for further training and professional development as a teacher.
  • 4.3 Advising and co‑operating with the Principal and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, programmes, methods of teaching, assessment and pastoral arrangements.

DISCIPLINE / HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • 5.1 Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils in accordance with employing authority policies, safeguarding health and safety both on premises and during authorised activities elsewhere.
  • 5.2 Participating in meetings concerning curriculum or school administration and pastoral arrangements.

PUBLIC EXAMINATIONS

  • Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing pupils for such examinations; recording and reporting such assessments and supervising pupils during examinations.

MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES / ADMINISTRATION

  • 7.1 Contributing to the selection, appointment and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
  • 7.1 Co‑ordinating or managing the work of other teachers.
  • 7.1 Participating in the review, development and management of curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
  • 7.2 Participating in administrative and organisational tasks related to duties, including management of support staff, ordering and allocation of equipment and materials.
  • 7.2 Attending assemblies; registering attendance of pupils and supervising pupils before, during or after school sessions.

DAYS / HOURS OF WORK

  • 8.1 A full‑time teacher (other than one in a residential establishment) shall be available for work on 195 days in any year, not more than 190 days of classroom teaching.
  • 8.1 A teacher shall be available to perform duties at times and places specified by the Principal for up to 1,265 hours in any year, exclusive of preparation, marking and travel time.
  • 8.1 Teachers may not be required to teach or supervise in a classroom for more than 25 hours per week in primary or special schools and 23.5 hours per week in secondary schools.
  • 8.1 Unless employed under a separate contract, teachers shall not be required to undertake mid‑day supervision.
  • 8.1 Teachers shall have a break of at least 30 minutes between 12 pm and 2 pm; nursery schools and nursery units have a break of at least 30 minutes between 12 pm and 2:30 pm.

STAFF COVER

  • 9.1 Supervising and teaching pupils whose teacher is not available under specified enrolment limits.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Responsible for the overall management and educational provision for pupils with severe learning difficulties and ASD.
  • Qualified to teach in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland, with GTCNI registration before start of post.
  • Minimum two months demonstrable teaching experience with severe learning difficulties and ASD.
  • Experience working with a range of professionals to meet SEN needs and using specialist equipment, facilities or skills.
  • Experience using augmentative and alternative communication strategies such as PECS, Makaton and Gestalt Language Boards.
  • Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding, SEND code of practice, assessment methods, trauma‑informed practices, augmentative communication systems and sensory integration approaches.
  • Effective classroom management skills, ability to provide inclusive learning environment, initiative, problem solving, flexibility, professional competence development, collaborative work and teamwork motivation.
  • Values orientation evidence reflecting the school’s ethos.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA (INTERVIEW)

  • Knowledge of curriculum, safeguarding, SEND code of practice, assessment methods, trauma‑informed practices, augmentative communication systems, sensory integration approaches.
  • Interview assessment of teaching, classroom management, supportiveness, collaboration, teamwork, and values orientation.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • Minimum two months paid experience teaching in an SLD school setting.
  • Completion of training in trauma‑informed practice.
  • Current Team Teach certificate for positive handling.
  • Evidence of writing Personal Learning Plans / Individual Education Plans.
