Apprentice Bricklayer – Apprenticeship Program

Join our dynamic and forward‑thinking team at HMS as an Apprentice Bricklayer, where you will gain practical, on‑site experience while working towards a recognised qualification. This is a 24‑month apprenticeship leading to industry‑standard training and development, with college attendance as part of your programme. Successful candidates will be expected to travel to their assigned college (City of Liverpool College) or workplace as required.

What Will You Be Doing?

  • Assist with bricklaying tasks including basic brickwork, pointing, groundworks, and repairs under supervision
  • Support associated tasks such as plastering, flagging, and joinery to develop multi‑skilled knowledge
  • Learn how to plan and organise work effectively, using time, tools, and materials efficiently
  • Work within an appointment‑based system and communicate with customers and colleagues
  • Develop skills alongside qualified tradespeople on live construction and maintenance sites
  • Identify repair requirements and learn how to complete work safely and to a high standard
  • Use IT systems to receive instructions, update job progress, and support materials ordering
  • Complete documentation accurately and support reporting processes
  • Manage materials efficiently and help reduce waste
  • Follow all health and safety procedures and report hazards or incidents
  • Support high standards of customer care and service delivery
  • Attend college and complete all required coursework and assessments
  • Take part in ongoing training and development throughout the apprenticeship
  • Work collaboratively with other trades and teams to complete jobs effectively
  • Carry out additional duties appropriate to the level of the apprenticeship role
  • Develop the skills, knowledge, and competence required to independently carry out all core tasks associated with the trade by the end of the apprenticeship programme

What We’re Looking For

  • Applicants should ideally hold GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4/C or above, or Functional Skills Level 1 or 2 (or equivalent qualifications). However, consideration may also be given to candidates without formal qualifications where there is relevant construction experience or supervisory responsibility, and suitability may be assessed through a skills assessment and/or professional discussion. In some cases, completion of Functional Skills in English and/or Maths may be required as part of the apprenticeship.
  • Strong work ethic and enthusiasm for learning a trade
  • Commitment to college attendance and completing all aspects of the apprenticeship
  • Good IT skills and ability to use communication systems effectively
  • Excellent organisation and ability to meet deadlines
  • A customer‑focused attitude and ability to work well as part of a team
  • Flexibility, resilience, and willingness to learn in a fast‑paced environment
  • Ability to take initiative and follow instructions accurately
  • A willingness and ability to work towards obtaining a full UK driving licence during the apprenticeship, as this will be required to fully undertake the role

Assessment Day

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an assessment day to further evaluate their suitability for the apprenticeship. Assessment day will take place on 15th June 2026 at The City of Liverpool College.

College or Training Organisation

  • All Bricklayer apprentices will attend Liverpool City College.

Your Training Plan

You will complete a structured 24‑month apprenticeship, combining on‑job training with day‑release college attendance. You will work towards a recognised qualification in Bricklaying while gaining hands‑on experience in real working environments.

During Your Apprenticeship

  • You will work across our key operational areas in Liverpool, Warrington, St Helens, and surrounding regions, gaining exposure to a variety of projects and building a strong foundation of trade skills and knowledge.
