Job Description:

At Learning to Live (L2L), our mentors play a vital role in supporting young people with a variety of learning, emotional and behavioural needs. Working collaboratively with the wider L2L team, you will help each young person work towards personalised targets that build positive relationships, grow confidence, enhance decision-making skills, and support personal and academic development through practice and experience.

Purpose of the Role:

To build meaningful, supportive, and development-focused relationships with young people—empowering them to thrive personally, socially, and educationally. Mentors help young people develop coping strategies, make positive choices, and access opportunities that enhance their wellbeing, confidence, and life skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support & Relationship Building
  • Empower young people to overcome challenges and develop future-focused strategies.
  • Model a healthy, trusting relationship through clear communication and appropriate boundaries.
  • Recognise and nurture each young person’s strengths, talents, and interests.
  • Provide encouragement, active listening, and supportive dialogue.
  • Engage in community-based activities that broaden experiences and promote personal growth.

Session Delivery:

  • Plan, deliver, and review purposeful sessions aligned with individual targets.
  • Provide clear and accurate reports after each session, including safeguarding notes and near misses.
  • Communicate effectively with families, young people, stakeholders, and the L2L management team.
  • Ensure safe and appropriate 1:1 working practices at all times.
  • Maintain compliance with GDPR and L2L safeguarding policies (aligned with KCSIE).

Professionalism & Development:

  • Adhere to the L2L ethos, mission, vision, and values.
  • Maintain healthy professional boundaries with all members of the L2L community.
  • Participate in training opportunities provided by L2L.
  • Proactively seek opportunities for personal growth and professional development.
  • Follow all L2L policies and procedures.

Essential Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Recent experience supporting vulnerable young people (within the last 2 years preferred).
  • Understanding that every young person has unique strengths that can be developed.
  • Valid driving licence with business insurance and a current MOT.
  • Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain) and enrolment in the DBS Update Service.
  • Safeguarding Level 2 training (or be prepared to acquire).
  • GDPR certificate (or be prepared to acquire).
  • PREVENT training within the last year (or be prepared to acquire).
  • Two references (including one from a current or most recent employer).
  • GCSEs in Maths and English (or equivalent).

Session Locations:

  • Community-based activities across Dorset (museums, activity centres, natural spaces, etc.).
  • Access to L2L session spaces in Southbourne and Winton (BCP Local Authority area)
  • Mentors must not conduct sessions from their own homes.
