Catering Assistant – Job Description

Reports To: Senior/Unit Catering Supervisor

Responsible To: Catering Manager via the Area Catering Manager

Job Purpose: To actively participate in the daily operation of the Catering Unit under the direction of the Senior/Unit Catering Supervisor, providing efficient hygienic service, ensuring customer satisfaction, and promoting sales.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Basic preparation of food and beverages, including vegetables and snacks using appropriate equipment.
  • Simple cooking, including reconstitution of prepared food.
  • Organise and control food service points.
  • Transfer and serve meals and snacks, including transported meals.
  • Assist in promoting meals to pupils, parents and principals.
  • Maintain regular contact with the central kitchen regarding all service delivery aspects.
  • Prepare the dining area: setting out tables, chairs, benches and serving points as required.
  • Set tables; lay out cutlery, water jugs, etc.
  • Complete general kitchen and dining room duties including washing up, clearing equipment, tables, chairs and benches.
  • Clean kitchen/servery, dining room, and equipment including floors and walls.
  • Record temperatures for control purposes as required.
  • Secure premises as required.
  • Perform duties delegated in connection with service provision.
  • Carry out all duties in compliance with Acts of Parliament, statutory instruments, regulations, codes of practice and legal requirements.
  • Complete necessary administration.
  • Undertake duties up to and including those in the same grade if within competency.
  • Promote and adhere to the values/ethos of the School.

Additional Information

Where part of the school premises are used for dual consumption of food and educational purposes, non‑catering staff are responsible for the cleaning of the room.

  • Motivation towards providing excellent food and customer service for children and young people.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of working in a customer service or catering role.
