Road & Rail Customs Clearance Operator – Dover

About the position
Hours: Full time, 37.5 hours per week, 9am – 5.30pm Monday to Friday
The purpose of the Customs Clearance Operator is to action all customs clearances at the site, calculating and processing customs duties and taxes, entering details onto specialised customs software (CHIEF, CNS, Destin8, CFSP, Datafreight, Sequoia), and issuing correct documents to ensure timely clearance and continued shipment flow.
A key part of this role is liaising with customs officials, subcontractors, customers and various agencies to process shipments and complete documentation, and to maintain a current understanding of customs laws and regulations to advise customers on import/export restrictions, tariff systems, insurance requirements and related matters.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Effectively, efficiently, and accurately process primary road freight customs clearances within relevant laws and regulations.
- Work closely with existing customers to maintain service levels.
- Liaise with customers, suppliers, government agencies, freight forwarders, importers, exporters and others to prepare and process customs clearances for the company.
- Arrange import clearances into bond and removal from bond for road, sea, and air freight as required.
- Create, link, and discharge all customs documents including T1, T2, T2 groupage, T2F, T2LF, NES & NCTS export entries.
- Process clearances using specific systems (Impatex, Destin8 & Compass, CHIEF, CDS, Sequoia, Datafreight).
- Liaise with operational staff and sales teams for day‑to‑day customs enquiries.
- Complete customer invoices correctly and promptly, with accurate values, declarations, and HS codes.
- Arrange ad‑hoc customs shipments for partners and prepare corresponding invoices.
- Interface with HMRC regarding compliance issues as required.
- Keep updated on customs clearance legislation, laws and regulations.
- Support the operations team with administrative duties such as arranging haulage, liaising with collection and delivery points, and retrieving necessary documentation for shipping and customs purposes.
- Attend relevant seminars and training courses to maintain knowledge of customs legislation and requirements.
- Provide out‑of‑hours support for customs clearance requirements.
About you
The ideal candidate will have GCSE or equivalent Maths and English (oral and written) with grades A–C, and highly competent computer skills in all areas of Microsoft Office. They should demonstrate customer service excellence, effective communication skills, knowledge and experience of working within a customs role in a road freight environment, and the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
