This is a rolling campaign; applicants cannot reapply within a six‑month period.

This scheme is open to former, qualified probation officers who have left the Civil Service within the last five years.

When you meet the eligibility criteria and your application is accepted, you can be fast‑tracked back to the Probation Service with no need for a lengthy application, interview or repeat entry‑level training or assessment.

We will contact you to discuss your preferred work base, subject to passing pre‑employment checks.

Eligibility

  • Former civil servants who were previously appointed on merit on the basis of fair and open competition may be re‑appointed (to a permanent or fixed‑term appointment) within a maximum of five years of leaving the Civil Service.
  • Can return to a role that is the same grade as when they left, or lower (promotions under Exception 5 are not permitted).
  • There is no automatic right of return; it depends on business need, location availability and other relevant factors.
  • Must have successfully completed the probationary period before leaving the service.

Responsibilities

You will return to the Probation Service as a qualified probation officer and support the rehabilitation of individuals on probation to keep the public safe.

Working arrangements and contract

  • Full‑time or part‑time contracts, permanent or temporary.
  • Temporary contracts for three, six or nine months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of two years.
  • Vacancies will be offered within a 60‑minute commute of the selected home location.

Pre‑employment checks

All successful candidates must pass: Occupational Health Review, Enhanced Level 2 security vetting (including DBS Enhanced), and Non‑Police Personnel Vetting (NPPV) Level 2.

Training

Upon return, an individualised training needs analysis will be conducted to identify any remaining training required.

Salary and benefits

Full‑time salary: £35,130, plus a London allowance of £4,250 for London, Staines and Watford base locations where applicable. Higher starting salaries may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis.
