Job title: Trainee British Sign Language (BSL) Teacher

Salary: Competitive – based on experience and qualifications

Hours: Part-time (2–3 days per week) with the option to extend to full-time through a dual role across The Inclusivity Group

Located: Office-based in Plymouth, Devon, with occasional travel or remote delivery as needed.

Reporting to: Lead Teacher and Training Manager

Main Purpose of the Role

As a Trainee British Sign Language Teacher, you will be working as part of a team to deliver engaging, inclusive, and structured BSL training across multiple formats, supporting learner progression, and contributing to course development and innovation.

You will play a key role in supporting our learners’ journeys from enrolment through to the Signature qualification. You will have the opportunity to design and deliver bespoke training courses for a range of clients. You will also collaborate across the organisation to promote inclusive practice and client engagement.

This is a developmental role designed for individuals who are:

  • Working towards or interested in completing BSL Level 6
  • Not yet qualified as a teacher but willing to complete a recognised teaching qualification
  • Eager to learn through shadowing, mentoring, supervision, and structured training

The role will provide you with the tools, experience, and knowledge to become a fully qualified BSL Teacher through a supported programme. You will assist in delivering BSL and Deaf awareness training while progressing towards independent teaching and learner support responsibilities.

This is a part-time position (2–3 days per week) with the potential to develop into a full-time post through a dual role within The Inclusivity Group (e.g., resource creation, client engagement, internal training, etc.).

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

  • Assist qualified teachers with delivering BSL courses at Levels 1, 2, and 3
  • Support the delivery of Deaf awareness and BSL taster sessions
  • Engage with learners and help create a positive, inclusive learning environment
  • Participate in team-teaching and practical workshops as part of your development plan

Training and Development

  • Complete internal and external training to work towards BSL Level 6 and a teaching qualification
  • Receive structured mentoring and supervision from experienced team members
  • Attend CPD and internal workshops to develop teaching, planning, and assessment skills

Curriculum and Resource Development

  • Help develop lesson materials, worksheets, and visual resources under guidance
  • Assist with filming and preparing BSL content for online platforms and training modules

Learner and Course Administration

  • Support course administration including attendance tracking and learner records
  • Learn to use the Signature portal for learner registration and assessment submissions
  • Attend team meetings and contribute to lesson planning and course delivery discussions

Collaboration and Community Engagement

  • Represent the organisation at community engagement events and promotional activities
  • Assist with local awareness campaigns and networking to promote training services
  • Participate in cross‑organisation activities within The Inclusivity Group as appropriate

Skills and Experience Required

  • — Passion for BSL, Deaf awareness, and inclusive communication
  • – Working towards or committed to completing BSL Level 6
  • – Willingness to complete a recognised teaching qualification with company support
  • – Positive attitude, reliability, and willingness to learn through structured training
  • – Basic knowledge of Deaf culture and communication barriers
  • – Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • – Organised, self‑motivated, and a team player
  • – Level 3 or 6 Certificate in British Sign Language (or equivalent)
  • – Experience volunteering or working in a learning or community environment
  • – Lived experience of Deafness, disability, or access barriers
  • – Interest in progressing to full BSL Teacher status and developing a long‑term career
  • – Experience delivering bespoke or workplace‑based training
  • – Familiarity with online and blended learning approaches
  • – Experience supporting learners with additional needs
  • – Interest in training development, project work, or cross‑company collaboration
