Are you looking to start your career in early years? Ragamuffins are looking for an enthusiastic apprentice to join their established team. Beautifully set in a big character house, the role will involve planning and delivering fun and educational activities for children, whilst taking care of the children’s developmental and personal needs.

Wage

£15,600 for your first year, with potential increases depending on your age.

National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices.

What you’ll do at work

As an apprentice you will be a key member of the nursery team, your duties may include:

  • Planning and delivering fun and educational activities with the children
  • Playing alongside and with children to support their play
  • Contributing to children’s records through observation
  • Assisting with the supervision of children at rest times and at mealtimes
  • Creating a safe, happy environment for the children
  • Ensuring the play area is clean and tidy at all times
  • Working alongside outside agencies to support the children

Training

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

  • Support babies and young children through a range of transitions and significant events, such as moving onto school or moving house.
  • Recognise when a child is in danger, at risk of serious harm or abuse; explain the procedures to protect them, covering domestic, neglect, physical, emotional and sexual abuse.
  • Identify risks and hazards in the provision and during off‑site visits for both children and staff, following reporting procedures.
  • Use prevention and control of infection techniques for hand washing and food preparation and hygiene; deal with spillages safely, dispose of waste correctly, and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Use equipment, furniture and materials safely and securely, following manufacturers’ instructions and provision requirements.
  • Encourage children to be aware of personal safety and the safety of others, and develop personal hygiene practices, including oral hygiene.
  • Promote health and wellbeing by encouraging healthy, balanced and nutritious meals, snacks and drinks, and physical activity both indoors and outdoors.
  • Carry out respectful care routines appropriate to the child’s development, stage, dignity and needs, including feeding, nappy changing, potty training and rest provision.
  • Communicate with all children, including those with additional language or needs, in ways that will be understood; extend children’s development and learning through verbal and non‑verbal communication.
  • Use a range of communication methods to share information with children, parents or carers and other professionals.
  • Work with colleagues to identify and plan educational programmes to support children’s holistic development through play, creativity, social development and learning.
  • Implement and review activities to support children’s play, creativity, social development and learning; clear up after activities.
  • Observe children, assess and record outcomes; share results accurately and confidentially in line with statutory and provision requirements.
  • Support early language development and interest in mark‑making, writing, reading and mathematics.
  • Use feedback and mentoring to identify and support areas for development, skills and career opportunities.
  • Work cooperatively with colleagues, other professionals and agencies to meet the children’s needs and enable progress.
  • Work alongside parents or carers and recognize their role in the child’s health, wellbeing, learning and development.
  • Encourage parents or carers to take an active role in the child’s care, play, learning and development.
  • Demonstrate how to share information with parents or carers about healthy diets, dental care and physical activity.
  • Level 2 Early Years Practitioner apprenticeship standard, including Level 2 Practitioner Diploma, Level 1 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required), End‑Point Assessment (EPA) and on‑the‑job training.

Requirements

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • Maths (grade 4‑9)
