Job Summary

These roles are replacement roles within the Academy of the Great Western Hospital with a focus on Undergraduate Medical Education. As a Trust, we place high importance on staff wellbeing and offer support to maintain wellbeing for you and your colleagues.

The posts are aimed at post‑foundation year doctors who wish to work in a medical educational role at the Academy in Swindon with medical students from the University of Bristol, Oxford, and Kings College London.

Role Overview

The Clinical Teaching Fellow role is a fixed‑term career development opportunity, normally taken for one year prior to specialty training. The post is 12 months, designed as a fellowship rather than a permanent service role. The post includes an educational role (80%) delivered in the academy and a supernumerary clinical component in the NHS Trust (20%) or an alternate 50/50 clinical/educational ward‑based role.

Responsibilities

  • Work daily with the Academy Undergraduate Manager and administrators, and UC/UTs to organise the formal teaching programme and clinical placements for that unit.
  • Ensure formal teaching sessions are appropriately timetabled and delivered.
  • Maintain regular communication with UT/UC and fellow CTFs; meet formally throughout the year to review courses and plan for the future; develop and use an individual or group CTF Outlook Calendar.
  • For office based CTFs: work 40 hours per week (09:00‑17:00); one day spent in a clinical specialty; flexible workload.
  • For ward based CTFs: assigned to ED or ITU on a 6‑12 month rotation; alternating clinical and academy work, with some weekend coverage.
  • Academic duties (80% of time) include delivery of the curriculum, student choice projects, and field trips.
  • Clinical duties (20% of time) include daytime, band 1A work; out‑of‑hours or on‑call roles may be negotiated and are paid separately.
  • Potential for allocation to other clinical areas under exceptional circumstances, as directed by the Medical Director and Trust Executive Board.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical degree.
  • Completed Foundation Training (Years 1 & 2) within the NHS (proof required).
  • Management and administrative experience.
  • Teaching experience.

  • Additional Information

    Applicants will need to pass a Disclosure and Barring Service check. A Certificate of Sponsorship will be considered for skilled worker applicants. Applicants must hold current UK professional registration.
