Job Description
Job Title: Teacher – Primary
Reports To: Principal
Professional Duties
- Exercise of general professional duties as circumstances may require.
- If employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal, act accordingly.
- If employed by a board under terms that do not assign a specific school, under reasonable direction of the board and the principal of any school where the teacher may be required to work.
Specific Duties
- Exercise particular duties: a teacher not principal must perform, following reasonable directions from the principal, any duties reasonably assigned.
- A teacher referred to in paragraph 1(b) must perform, as directed by the board or principal, any duties reasonably assigned.
Planning and Teaching
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
- Teaching according to pupils’ educational needs, including setting and marking of work.
- Assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
General Duties
- Promote the general progress and well-being of pupils.
- Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational, social matters, further education and careers, including sources of expert advice.
- Make records of pupils’ personal and social needs, unless compromising the teacher’s position.
- Communicate with parents of pupils.
- Communicate and cooperate with approved external persons or bodies.
- Participate in meetings arranged for the above purposes.
Assessment & Reporting
- Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils, unless compromising the teacher’s position.
Staff Development & Professional Development
- Participate in staff development and performance review schemes if required.
- Review teaching methods and work programmes from time to time.
- Engage in further training and professional development as a teacher.
- Advise and cooperate with principal and other teachers on development of courses, teaching materials, programmes, methods, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
Discipline, Health and Safety
- Maintain good order and discipline among pupils and safeguard their health and safety on and off school premises.
- Participate in meetings on curriculum, administration, organisation, and pastoral arrangements.
Public Examinations
- Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessing pupils for such examinations.
- Record and report assessments and supervise pupils during examinations.
Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration
- Contribute to the selection, appointment, and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
- Coordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
- Partake in reviews, development and management of curriculum, organisational and pastoral functions.
- Participate in administrative tasks related to duties above, including management or supervision of support staff and ordering of equipment and materials.
- Attend assemblies subject to Article 22 of the Order.
- Register attendance of pupils and supervise pupils before, during or after school sessions.
Working Hours & Days
- Full-time teacher (not in a residential establishment) available for work on 195 days a year, with no more than 190 days for classroom teaching.
- Teacher available to perform duties at times and places specified by the principal or board, for 1,265 hours a year, excluding off‑premises preparation, marking, and travel.
- Teacher may not teach more than 25 hours a week in primary or special school, and 23.5 hours a week in secondary school.
- Mid‑day supervision is not required unless a separate contract applies.
- Teachers receive a break of at least 30 minutes between 12:00 and 14:00 (or 12:00 and 14:30 for nursery schools).
- For staff cover, a teacher with an average daily enrolment of 222 or less may provide cover; with enrolment above 222, no cover after the second day of absence for teachers not permanent in primary 1, primary 2 or nursery classes.
Qualifications and Professional Membership
- Hold a teaching qualification recognised for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
- Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up the post.
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year’s demonstrable experience teaching Key Stage 2 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
- Experience using classroom strategies to support and challenge children of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs.
- Experience using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.
- Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy and practice.
- Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
- Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet learning needs.
- Knowledge of digital classroom tools, media and use of tablets/mobile technologies.
- Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.

Desirable Criteria
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience teaching P6 or P7 at Key Stage 2.
- Experience monitoring pupil progress, performance and intervention.
- Hold Catholic RE Certificate.
- Experience leading an Eco School programme.
