Job Description:

Specialist SEN school in the Dudley area, supporting pupils aged 4 to 16. In this role, you will support children and young people with a range of additional needs, including moderate and complex learning difficulties, physical disabilities, communication needs, and sensory needs.

As an HLTA, you will take a lead role in supporting teaching and learning across the school, delivering planned lessons, covering classes when required, and working closely with teachers to adapt learning activities to meet individual pupil needs. You will support pupils in accessing learning through structured routines, positive behaviour strategies, communication support, and personalised interventions.

You will also play a key role in promoting emotional regulation, engagement, and progress across both academic and developmental outcomes. The role requires confidence in leading small groups and whole class learning where appropriate, as well as supporting pupils with complex needs, which may include personal care and physical support duties.

The successful candidate will be confident, adaptable, and passionate about making a positive impact in a specialist setting. You will join a dedicated and supportive team who place a strong emphasis on wellbeing, collaboration, and high‑quality SEND provision, ensuring the best possible outcomes for every pupil.

The SEN HLTA Role:

  • Assist pupils with tasks as needed
  • Support with administrative tasks and duties when not providing cover
  • Plan, communicate, distribute, and supervise pre‑agreed work set by the class teacher
  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEND, including SLD, PMLD
  • Implement strategies to support behaviour, emotional regulation, and individual learning outcomes
  • Work closely with class teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to meet EHCP targets
  • Help create a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment
  • Support pupils with personal care or physical needs where required
  • Promote independence, confidence, and resilience in learners

We welcome applications from candidates with experience in any of the following roles:

  • SEN Teaching Assistant, SEND HLTA, Learning Support Assistant (LSA), HLTA, 1:1 TA, Behaviour Mentor
  • Experience of working as a Cover Supervisor
  • Experience working in a special school, PRU, alternative provision or inclusive mainstream school
  • Strong understanding of SEND, particularly supporting pupils with MLD, PD
  • Empathetic, adaptable and resilient approach
  • Excellent behaviour management strategies
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Relevant training such as Team Teach, Makaton or PECS is desirable but not essential
