Wilson Stuart School is an Ofsted designated outstanding all age (2 – 25 years) Special School which provides very high-quality education for 284 pupils and young people who have physical disabilities, and/or complex medical conditions.

About this role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Special Schools Outreach Support (SSOS) Teacher to join our team. This role is due to commence as soon as possible and is fixed‑term until July 2027, with the potential to continue into the 2027/2028 academic year and beyond, subject to funding.

We are seeking an experienced, qualified teacher with proven experience of working with students with ASC and SEMH. Based at Wilson Stuart School, the successful candidate will work across the city as part of the Birmingham Special Schools Outreach Programme, providing specialist support to mainstream schools.

The role involves supporting colleagues to meet a wide range of special educational needs, working on individual and group cases following referrals through the SSOS portal, and delivering targeted, creative and practical support. You will work collaboratively with mainstream and special school staff, attend relevant training and meetings, and liaise with external agencies, including medical and support services, to ensure coordinated and holistic support for students and families.

This role requires excellent organisation, flexibility and resilience, alongside a calm and sensitive approach when dealing with challenging situations. You will be expected to contribute positively to service development, manage your own workload effectively, and participate fully in professional development and school-based meetings as appropriate.

We Are Looking for Candidates Who Have:

  • A good standard of education and Qualified Teacher Status, with previous experience working with students with ASC and SEMH, and further education and/or early years’ experience
  • The ability to use a range of augmented communication methods, including body signing, intensive interaction, communication aids and objects of reference, and to work with individual students to deliver innovative and creative solutions
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills, familiarity with a range of assessment methods to support planning, and good ICT skills
  • A positive attitude to service and school development, with strong organisational skills, the ability to manage workload and meet deadlines, and a calm, flexible and adaptable approach
  • Sensitivity to the needs of students with disabilities and an understanding of the challenges faced by their families
