Role Summary
As a Healthcare Assistant you will assist in the delivery of high‑quality nursing care to patients in prison with the support of a registered nurse. You will provide physical care to patients according to a written care plan, taking blood pressures, ECGs, other observations and wound care, and engaging in holistic, needs‑led care.
Responsibilities
- Provide physical care to patients according to a written care plan.
- Take blood pressures, ECGs, other observations and perform wound care.
- Engage with patients in holistic, needs‑led care addressing physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual needs.
- Promote health and well‑being through health promotion activities and programmes, responding to patient needs and assisting patients to attain optimal physical health.
- Assist in emergency call‑outs and initiate emergency procedures when appropriate.
- Act as second checker on medication rounds.
- Order and maintain stock, ensure treatment rooms are clean, tidy and well‑stocked.
- Escalate to registered healthcare professionals as appropriate.
- Document contemporaneously and accurately using appropriate templates in SystmOne.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and security and adhere to all organisational and prison policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Develop good working relationships with patients, carers, relatives, other professionals and prison and healthcare staff.
Custodial Responsibilities
- Assume personal responsibility for the security of issued keys.
- Understand and comply with prison orders, procedures and instructions in your area of work.
- Comply with all security requirements and respond to any situation or circumstance that might indicate a threat to security or safety.
- Complete incident, security, injury or other reports as appropriate and report breaches of order and discipline.
- Contribute to effective risk assessment and management procedures.
Communication
- Communicate effectively with patients and overcome barriers to understanding (e.g., physical or mental health conditions or learning disabilities).
- Maintain inter‑disciplinary and inter‑agency working with all relevant agencies.
- Develop close working partnerships with HMPS, prison governors, heads of prison services, forensic services, probation services, Crown Prosecution Service, police and other non‑statutory agencies integral to prisoner/patient care and offender management.
- Undertake other duties agreed in conjunction with registered staff and integrated primary healthcare services.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants are required to have hospital or primary care experience and be competent in taking blood pressure, ECGs, and other observations. Knowledge of wound care is also required for this post. All applicants must be willing to undertake National Security Vetting to work in a prison setting.

- Applicants not UK passport holders with less than five years UK address history must provide a Police Certificate in English.
- UK passport holders who have lived abroad for more than six months in the last three years must provide a certificate of good conduct or an overseas police check in English from the countries resided in or visited.
