Assistant Warden (Broads & Lower Waveney)
Salary: The starting salary will be up to £27,385.07 per annum depending on skills, knowledge and experience

Working hours: Full time, 37.5 hours per week (typically Monday to Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm)
Location: Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve & Visitor Centre, Burnt Hill Lane, Lowestoft, Suffolk, NR33 8HU
Responsibilities
This role supports the Senior Warden in delivering high‑quality conservation management across multiple reserves, including Carlton Marshes, Oulton Marshes, Castle Marshes, Worlingham Marshes, Lound Lakes, Barsham Marshes, Winks Meadow and Gunton Meadow.
Key duties include:
- Ensuring reserves are managed in line with conservation objectives and management plans, including agri‑environment scheme agreements and Cross Compliance.
- Completing habitat management tasks, coordinating ecological monitoring, preparing clear evidence‑based reports.
- Preparing contractor specifications, supervising works, maintaining machinery, vehicles, equipment and reserve infrastructure.
- Discussing livestock welfare standards where applicable.
- Engaging the public, leading volunteer work parties, overseeing day‑to‑day volunteer activities, and ensuring Health & Safety procedures are understood and followed.
- Developing reserves as welcoming flagship sites for the Trust, maintaining safe, accessible trails, signage, interpretation and visitor facilities.
- Acting as an ambassador for Suffolk Wildlife Trust, supporting open days, guided walks, talks and communicating conservation impact through social media, local media and Trust communications.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Previous experience in a conservation or natural resource management role.
- Broad knowledge of habitat and conservation management, agri‑environment schemes, and Cross Compliance.
- Strong IT skills, particularly Microsoft 365, and willingness to use GIS, volunteer management and CRM systems.
- Familiarity with Health & Safety requirements.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and team working skills.
- Well‑organised, practical, adaptable, effective problem‑solver, self‑motivated, enthusiastic and engaging.
- Ability to undertake outdoor work in all weathers.
