Job Description:

Job Summary

You will be working for the Highways Operations & Development Department within Coventry City Council as a Highways Apprentice. You will be part of a team responsible for the construction and maintenance of footways, carriageways and drainage throughout the city.

Responsibilities

  • Paving, laying kerbs, raking tarmac, installing drainage systems and other routine maintenance tasks under the direction of Highways Site Supervisors and skilled operatives.
  • Actively supporting the learning and development required to achieve the Level 2 Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative apprenticeship standard.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Strong interest in highway construction and maintenance.
  • Willingness to work outside in all weathers, reliability, punctuality and good communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Capability to travel to the college for a week‑long block release and stay in a council‑provided hotel.
  • Commitment to complete the Level 2 Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative apprenticeship standard.

Fixed Term

This apprenticeship role is a fixed‑term contract for 18 months in line with the length of the apprenticeship training.
