Position: Mechanical Design Engineer – Production Design Support
Location: Bolton (dynamic hybrid working – 2–3 days per week on-site).
Salary: Circa £55,000, depending on experience.
Security Clearance
British Citizen or a Dual UK national with British citizenship. Candidates must undergo HMG Basic Personnel Security Standard checks (BPSS) at or after the offer stage. Restrictions and limitations regarding nationality and rights to work may apply.

The opportunity
MBDA’s growing order book has increased workload at the state‑of‑the‑art manufacturing facility in Bolton. We need a Mechanical Design Engineer to support design teams, address production issues, and sustain production rates across our product range.
The Production Design Support Team is a multi‑skilled group that resolves all aspects of inert weapon system build, test issues, and design enquiries.
The team acts as a crucial link between design and manufacturing, operating under strict time and cost pressures while maintaining demanding quality levels and delivery milestones. It is valued throughout the manufacturing and design organisations.
What we’re looking for
- Degree, HND or HNC qualified with experience in Mechanical Design and Development or Manufacturing Support.
- Experience in Mechanical Design Development – broader experience preferred; defence or aerospace industry an advantage.
- High proficiency with industry‑standard 3D CAD packages such as PTC CREO; able to interpret detailed drawings to BS8888 with GD & T controls.
- Knowledge of material selection and processes such as plating and painting.
- Capability in undertaking tolerance studies and analysis to ensure compliance with product definition.
- Experience in an environment using FMEA, DFA, DFM and other development techniques.
- Exposure to supporting manufacturing, resolving manufacturing issues, and transitioning products into production as part of a multi‑function, multi‑discipline team.
- Ability to scope tasks needed to resolve issues, manage own workload and potentially that of other team members.
- Clear and concise engineering documentation skills (reports, investigation logs) and good verbal communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
- Pro‑active, motivated and tenacious under time pressure. Strong team player, supports knowledge transfer and applies problem‑solving methodologies 8‑D and 6‑Sigma.
