Senior Legal Counsel, Commercial, IP & AI – UK Legal team at Monzo. Report to Principal Legal Counsel. Responsible for advising on commercial contracts, IP, AI matters for the UK business.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise on commercial contracts, including drafting and negotiating agreements directly and supervising work delegated by commercial legal contractors.
- Collaborate with the Group Commercial Legal team to develop and implement processes, workflows, playbooks, and use new technologies to increase efficiency and scalability of commercial legal advice across Monzo.
- Deliver training, share insights from work, and help educate other teams on commercial contracts.
- Support the intellectual property strategy, including clearance searches, registrations, oppositions; work with external advisers.
- Provide subject‑matter expertise on AI‑related matters, including regulation and contracting for AI.
- Manage relationships with external legal counsel and alternative legal service providers, optimizing legal spend for maximum impact.
Key Qualifications
- 5+ years post‑qualification experience in private practice, in‑house, or high‑growth tech company (including banks or financial institutions).
- Deep experience with contract law, comfortable explaining terms and negotiating service credits, terminations, liability provisions, etc.
- Experience advising on intellectual property matters, especially copyright and trademarks.
- Experience in AI, particularly generative AI, and related legal issues.
- Familiarity with legal technology, generative AI systems, and contract lifecycle management platforms.
- Experience with financial services regulation relevant to commercial contracts (outsourcing, resilience, continuity).
- Experience with data protection transactional elements (data sharing agreements, processing agreements, standard contractual clauses).
- Strong strategic thinking, communication, problem‑solving skills, balancing business and risk perspectives.
- Willingness to handle a wide range of legal issues beyond core areas, proactively detailing cost‑effective engagement of external counsel.
- Comfortable operating at all organisational levels and liaising with various stakeholders.
- Proactive risk assessment, horizon scanning, and independent mitigation action implementation.
- Dynamic, entrepreneurial approach, comfortable with ambiguity in fast‑paced, evolving environment.
- Open, curious, and excited about intersection of banking and technology.
