Data Protection and Information Governance Officer

We are looking for proactive and knowledgeable applicant to help us manage our information safely, lawfully and confidently ensuring we meet our statutory obligations under data protection and information governance legislation. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in ensuring the Council meets its legal and regulatory obligations relating to data protection and information governance. If successful, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the Council’s compliance with UK GDPR and related legislation, strengthen information governance, and working with colleagues and stakeholders across the Council to help drive and promote a culture which values and protects information ensuring there is procedure and systems in place to ensure we do the right thing with information every day.
You will also play an important part in supporting information governance work linked to Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), helping coordinate, validate and prepare data across systems for migration and integration.
We’re looking for someone who combines sound technical expert knowledge with the ability to communicate clearly and pragmatically.
You’ll bring:
- A good working knowledge of UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and wider information governance principles
- Experience supporting information rights work (SAR/FOI/EIR) and working to tight statutory deadlines
- Confidence interpreting legislation and giving practical, proportionate advice to non‑specialists
- Strong written skills, judgement and attention to detail — especially when dealing with sensitive or confidential matters
- The ability to balance competing priorities, build relationships across services, and work constructively with colleagues across the organisation.
