About the role

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy machine learning, computer vision and generative AI solutions that directly impact customers and business operations.
  • Design and implement robust models, experiment with new approaches, and translate business problems into data‑science solutions.
  • Build prototypes, evaluate model performance statistically and in terms of business impact, and scale models into production.
  • Collaborate closely with Machine Learning Engineers and Software Engineers to ensure solutions are efficient, maintainable and meet Tesco’s technology standards.
  • Communicate complex ideas clearly to non‑technical stakeholders, contribute to internal knowledge sharing and represent Tesco in the external data‑science community.
  • Stay current with developments in Generative AI and Computer Vision, evaluate and integrate emerging techniques into Tesco’s data products.

Qualifications

  • Strong background in computer vision solutions; a mix of statistics and machine‑learning skills is welcome.
  • Track record in modifying and designing advanced algorithms and applying them to large real‑world data sets.
  • Experience in deep‑learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Experience with object‑detection models such as Faster‑RCNN, YOLO, EfficientDet and NVIDIA models.
  • Familiarity with libraries and tools: OpenCV, scikit‑image, SciPy, Pandas, Docker, Git.
  • Working knowledge of image processing and video technology.
  • Higher degree in a quantitative discipline (Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics) is preferred; equivalent commercial experience is also valued.
  • Strong coding practices, including version control and testing.
  • Ability to translate business problems into data‑science solutions and communicate findings to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Scientific mindset, critical thinking, proactive learning and a collaborative attitude.
