Private Client Solicitor (Director) – Wills and Probate

About the Department

Our client’s Wills & Probate Law department provides comprehensive personal services to private individuals, including will drafting, inheritance tax planning, administration of estates and trust setup. The team advises on international wills, contested wills, and applies for and obtains the grant of probate in England and Wales.

Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the department Director
  • Maintain a professional, pro‑active approach with strong client‑care skills and sensitivity towards clients’ needs
  • Oversee all aspects of Wills & Probate work, including estate administration, last wills, and lasting powers of attorney
  • Supervise solicitors, trainees and paralegals working on private‑client matters
  • Manage caseloads in terms of type and complexity
  • Assist with casework: estate administration, grant of probate, trust setting‑up, inheritance tax advice, court of protection matters, contested wills, and settlement of tax liabilities
  • Attend clients, take instructions and prepare cases
  • Handle correspondence and maintain accurate time‑costing procedures
  • Implement recommendations from monthly file reviews and ensure prompt action
  • Ensure compliance with file‑management standards

Key Skills

  • 3+ years post‑qualifying experience (PQE)
  • Current, valid practising certificate
  • Team player with adaptability to new challenges
  • Supervisory experience and KPI delivery
  • Excellent client‑care skills and ability to handle sensitive matters, including with vulnerable clients
  • Strong networking and communication skills for business development
  • Analytical and organisational abilities
  • Judgement and initiative in working to own cases
  • Working knowledge of Wills and Probate work and ability to service privately funded cases
  • Experience with advocacy an advantage
  • IT competence – familiar with Microsoft Office and document‑management systems
  • STEP qualification preferable but not essential
