We are looking to recruit a ward clerk position at St Michael’s Hospital supporting our team on a women’s acute mental health in-patient ward.

Main duties of the job

Applicants with previous administrative experience are expected to provide efficient and comprehensive administrative support to the ward manager and ward staff. The role requires friendly and approachable communication skills, the ability to build good working relationships in a fast‑paced environment, and sensitivity/confidentiality due to the nature of the service. Applicants should be able to work autonomously with a flexible approach, strong work ethic, and prioritise and multitask.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will provide an effective and efficient admin support service within an integrated, skill‑mixed team. The role involves multi‑tasking under pressure, working flexibly, and collating data for bed stays, ordering equipment/food, taking timely and accurate messages, fire warden duties, managing e‑mails, scanning, keeping up‑to‑date patient records, post and deliveries, arranging sick notes, etc. Work involves ward‑based duties alongside the team, jointly organising and planning weekly workloads, providing cover for colleagues, and offering lunchtime cover to the reception area on a rota basis.

Person Specification

Essential / Desirable

  • Good general education (e.g., GCSE English and Maths A-C)
  • QCF Business Administration Level 2
  • Excellent communication and customer care skills, written and verbal, demonstrating sympathy and compassion
  • Experience of working with Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Good organisation skills and ability to multitask
  • Experience working in a busy office / customer care environment
  • NHS experience
