Job Description:

Responsibilities

  • Assist in monitoring and maintaining cleaning standards on the ward.
  • Carry out spot cleaning to ensure spillages are dealt with swiftly and efficiently.
  • Ensure general and specialist equipment (e.g., drip stands, incubators and commodes) are cleaned on a regular basis as per policy.
  • Keep the ward safe and tidy at all times: remove clutter, tidy notice boards and signage.
  • Identify any problems with cleanliness and report to the ward sister.
  • Ensure specialist cleaning of surfaces and furnishings.
  • Monitor service delivery related to cleaning, food, linen and the environment at the agreed frequency.
  • Inform the ward sister of monitoring outcomes and agree action plans to ensure follow‑through.
  • Manage the defect call log book, ensuring all defects are logged, reported, recorded and closed down appropriately.
  • Coordinate ad hoc maintenance, liaising with the support service helpdesk as required.
  • Perform regular equipment monitoring in accordance with procedures.
  • Dispose of clinical, domestic and confidential waste as per policy.
  • Respect the privacy and dignity of patients while carrying out housekeeping duties.
  • Ensure equipment to be returned for reprocessing is stored safely.
  • Order and maintain temperature‑controlled stock for infectious diseases.
  • Prepare and serve hot/cold snacks (e.g., toast); complete a breakfast round daily.
  • Serve meals in conjunction with the nursing team, ensuring patients’ intake is known and dietary needs are met.
  • Provide eating assistance: cut food, place it within reach, encourage patients to eat.
  • Prepare hot/cold beverages and use appropriate trolley/equipment.
  • Serve all food and beverages at the correct temperature in line with food hygiene regulations.
  • Prepare areas for food and beverage consumption to ensure a pleasant environment for patients.
  • Wash all equipment and utensils used for food preparation, regeneration, serving and consumption.
  • Take responsibility for ward kitchen cleanliness: discard out‑of‑date food, rotate stock.
  • Label and store refrigerated food correctly as per policy.
  • Ensure discharged and newly admitted patients’ meal requirements are actioned in coordination with the ward nurse.
  • Coordinate extra meal requirements that may arise.
  • Provide access to fresh water for patients whose fluid intake is not medically restricted.
  • Perform household maintenance duties in line with local policy: replace light bulbs, clock batteries, unblock sinks.
  • Clean and prepare beds and handle linen.
  • Report bed availability to the Matron/Bed Bureau.
  • Monitor access and security use of premises and facilities.
  • Respect and maintain patient spaces, including attending to fruit, flowers, etc.
  • Minimise risk of adverse behaviour and security breaches.
  • Use communication skills to manage aggressive and abusive behaviour.
  • Receive, welcome and guide visitors on the ward, liaising with other staff as needed.
  • Transport equipment, consumables and written information as required.
  • Maintain and update paper‑based records and information.
  • Respond to general information requests and maintain confidentiality.
  • Report complaints and take appropriate action.
  • Assist with training staff involved in ward housekeeping to meet required standards.
  • Stay informed of new food hygiene standards and waste categorisation changes.
  • Monitor stock of HCID PPE and equipment, generating new requests as needed.
