Bank Staff – Flexible Work Hours
Bank Staff are offered occasional work covering planned or unplanned staff absences across Journey’s day centres. They receive the same pay rates, pro‑rated leave entitlement, and discounted lunches and refreshments as full‑time staff.
Roles available: Minibus Driver, Learning Disability Support Worker (peripatetic and permanent). Bank Staff may work up to 37 hours per week, depending on bookings. Minimum requirements – a clear enhanced DBS for Adult Services and two relevant professional references.
P/T Minibus Driver – Newcastle (20hrs weekly)
Salary: SP1 £13,276.82 per year (£12.77/hr)
Minibus drivers transport people with learning disabilities from their homes to and from our hubs. Typical hours are 07:30‑09:30 and 15:00‑17:00, Monday‑Friday. Drivers must be confident in vehicle operation, possess good local knowledge, and understand the needs of families and people with learning disabilities.
Qualifications: clear enhanced DBS for Adult Services; UK full driving licence without endorsements; two professional references from recent employment or academic studies.
FT Peripatetic Learning Disability Support Workers – Newcastle and Coundon (3 posts)
These specialist support workers provide training sessions at our sites, covering for staff on planned or unplanned leave. All posts require the ability to cover each of our sites. Positions are based at Newcastle Hub (2 posts) and Coundon Hub (1 post). A car is required, or an Access to Work travel package if eligible. Mileage is paid for travel beyond an ordinary commute.
Qualifications: NVQ in Health & Social Care (or working toward it as required by the Health & Social Care Act). Journey offers comprehensive training and career progression opportunities.
P/T Learning Disability Support Worker – Blyth (22hrs weekly)
Salary: SP2 £12.96 per hour
Plan and deliver activity sessions for groups of 8‑10 adults with learning disabilities, both at day centres and off‑site. Sessions aim to develop life and work skills, supporting clients to lead active, inclusive lives in their community.
Operating hours: 08:30‑16:30 Monday‑Thursday and 08:30‑16:00 Friday. Regular attendance at operating sites and community work required.
Minimum qualifications: clear enhanced DBS for Adult Services; two professional references. NVQ in Health & Social Care (or working toward it) is required.
Qualifications & Eligibility
Under the Health & Social Care Act, all social care workers must be qualified to work with vulnerable adults and/or children. Applicants for Learning Disability Support Worker roles must hold, or be prepared to work toward, an NVQ 2 in Health & Social Care. Senior roles require NVQ Level 3; managers require Level 5.
Requirements also apply to all bank and agency workers wishing to work at Journey.
Training and Development
Journey’s Training and Development programme enables all staff to develop skills, practice, and progress in their careers. Training agreements and potential funding opportunities are available. All staff receive 3–4 support & supervision sessions and an annual appraisal. The charity offers a private healthcare programme including counselling, available to employees 24/7 and their immediate family members.
Working Patterns
Normal operations: 08:30‑16:30 Monday‑Thursday; 08:30‑16:00 Friday. Some staff work part‑time, site‑based, or flexible work-from‑home arrangements. Unscheduled hours may be required on weekends or evenings, with Time Off in Lieu (TOIL) or overtime compensation.

Eligibility to Work in Social Care Services
Applicants must meet the Health & Social Care Act qualifications and hold or be working toward the required NVQ level. Overseas students must be fully qualified and on a suitable Graduate Visa; permanent posts cannot be offered to study‑visa holders.
