SLYC is a black-led and black run charity.

The Chair will lead the board, working collaboratively as this new charity develops, providing both support to the board and challenge to the CEO, ensuring the effective governance of the charity regarding its vision and mission.

The role of Chair will be to lead the Board. This is a key, impactful position in our organisation, as you will be supporting and shaping our work and strategic direction, and helping us achieve our purpose, organisational vision and the core mission of the organisation.

The position of Chair comes with a commitment to ensure our ability to provide and increase our range of much-needed support and services to our beneficiaries.

Essential Qualifications

  • Experience of being a Charity Chair.
  • A keen sense of strategic purpose.
  • An inclusive leadership style able to inspire and support everyone to participate on an equal basis.
  • The ability to listen and engage effectively. You are comfortable with challenge and debate and are able to encourage that in others whilst fostering a collaborative board environment.
  • Advocate – be able and willing to champion SLYC’s work through personal networks, social media, and other channels.
  • A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Be responsive (As a small charity, things sometimes ‘come up’ that require the Chair to advise, support – or give consent to. It is very helpful to have a Chair who is available and responsive).

In addition to the above, the Chair will have the responsibilities and qualities of all trustees.

What will you be doing?

As our Chair, you’ll have an essential role in contributing towards the future direction of SLYC and making a real difference to the lives of our service-users.

This year we’re expecting to make important decisions about funding and the future expansion of training programmes we will be offering and the Chair and Board of Trustees will be leading that change.

A year of exciting fundraising opportunities lies ahead, which offers possibilities of several new projects, for which a Chair with past experience of careful management working alongside other Board members is needed.

Chair role

  • Providing strategic leadership to the charity and the Board, ensuring that SLYC achieves its objectives according to its yearly strategic commitments
  • Work in partnership with the CEO and team to achieve our mission
  • Lead the board in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation
  • Optimise the relationship between the Board, staff and volunteers and SLYC’s partners and wider stakeholders
  • Help plan and steer Board meetings and the AGM, with others as appropriate
  • Be willing to act as a spokesperson and figurehead for SLYC (when necessary)
