Commissioning Engineer

Location: initially Crick; later travels in the UK

Type of contract: permanent role

As a Commissioning Engineer, you will be responsible for preparing, testing, and validating automated warehousing systems at customer sites prior to final handover. You ensure that systems are fully operational, safe, and compliant, and meet performance expectations. You’ll serve as a key link between engineering teams, integrators, and clients during the commissioning phase.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Commission and start up automated warehouse systems on-site, including robots, shuttles, elevators, and conveyor systems
  • Configure, test, and validate PLC software (e.g. Beckhoff) and perform live system testing
  • Monitor system performance and functionality during start-up and commissioning phases
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues or irregularities on-site
  • Provide first-line and second-line technical support to customers and integrators (on-site, remote, and by phone)
  • Support end users with system operation and provide training where required
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, commissioning documentation, and issue tracking
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams and external partners
  • Ensure all work is carried out in line with QSHE standards, safety regulations, and company procedures
  • Promote a culture of safety, lean thinking, and continuous improvement
  • Provide feedback to engineering and project teams to support system and process optimisation

Requirements:

  • Technical degree in engineering, automation, mechatronics, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience in commissioning, industrial automation, intralogistics, or a similar technical environment (recent graduates also considered)
  • Willingness to travel extensively within the UK and work flexible on-site schedules
  • Hands-on mindset with strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to perform basic repairs and on-site technical adjustments
  • Affinity with software and PLC systems (Beckhoff experience is an advantage)
  • Comfortable working in demanding environments, including height work or temperature-controlled areas when required
  • Strong communication skills and customer-oriented attitude
  • Eager to learn, proactive, sociable, and motivated to work in international project teams
