Description
The Faculty of Science & Engineering seeks to recruit an enthusiastic and proactive Technician to support the Biological Services Unit (BSU) at our Main Campus. The unit supports teaching and research activity for the School of Biological and Marine Sciences.
Working alongside academic staff, researchers, and students, you will play a central role in supporting the research activities of the BSU. Core responsibilities include husbandry and management of complex fish colonies, accurate data recording, and database maintenance. You will uphold the Health & Safety Executive and Home Office standards and work closely with the Facility Manager and technical staff to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
This is a fixed‑term position for 12 months due to funding. Working from home is not possible. We do not sponsor under the Skilled Worker visa; applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
What we’re looking for
- Good working knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act and the roles and responsibilities of license holders
- Knowledge of zebrafish husbandry
- Knowledge of procedures regarding safety, security, and personnel matters
- Security clearance for animal facilities
- Relevant animal working experience
- Ability to prioritise and complete work to deadlines
- Ability to engage with students and colleagues courteously and constructively
- Demonstrable experience with systems, equipment, processes, and procedures relevant to the work area
- Demonstrable relevant practical skills
- Repetitive, detail‑oriented work following set procedures
- Proven ability to multitask and work as part of a team
