This role is centred on supporting pupils at a critical stage in their education as they move from primary into secondary school. Pupils are working significantly below age‑related expectations, typically at an early years developmental stage, and require a consistent, nurturing, and highly individualised approach to learning. You will play a key role in ensuring pupils feel secure, engaged, and supported as they adjust to new routines, environments, and expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver a highly personalised, sensory and play‑based curriculum tailored to individual needs
  • Support pupils transition into secondary education, focusing on emotional regulation, engagement, and routine
  • Adapt teaching approaches in line with early years frameworks for secondary‑aged learners
  • Work collaboratively with Teaching Assistants to provide consistent, high‑quality support
  • Use and implement communication strategies such as PECS, Makaton, or other AAC systems
  • Monitor and assess progress against EHCP outcomes and individual learning plans
  • Create a structured, safe, and nurturing learning environment
  • Support pupils with complex communication, sensory, and behavioural needs

The Ideal Candidate

  • Holds Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Has experience working with SLD, SEN, or early years learners
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of early developmental stages (2–4 years)
  • Is confident managing behaviour using calm, consistent, and positive strategies
  • Has experience working with EHCPs and personalised learning approaches
  • Ideally has experience supporting transition phases (primary to secondary)
  • Is patient, resilient, and committed to inclusive education
  • Has excellent teamwork and communication skills

The Setting

This is a well‑established specialist provision supporting pupils with a wide range of additional needs, including learning difficulties, autism spectrum conditions, and speech and language needs. The setting places a strong emphasis on collaboration with families, external professionals, and the wider community to ensure the best outcomes for every pupil. Staff benefit from a supportive leadership team, strong collaboration, and a shared commitment to delivering high‑quality specialist education.

  • Competitive salary aligned with experience: £34,398 – £52,490
  • A supportive and experienced SEN leadership team
  • Excellent staff‑to‑pupil ratios
  • Ongoing training and professional development in specialist areas
