Job Title: Instructional Assistant

Job Description

This position assists teachers in instructing and directing the activities of students in the assigned classroom, under occasional supervision, to provide a well‑organized, smoothly functioning classroom environment. The Instructional Assistant also assists school administrators and staff with various administrative and clerical functions as requested.

Qualifications

  • Possess an associate’s degree from an accredited college.
  • Have earned 60 semester hours (or the equivalent) from an accredited college.
  • Have GED or high school diploma and a passing score on the ParaPro test prior to employment.

Must also have initiative, knowledge and understanding of children, the ability and willingness to work well with others, the ability to handle unforeseen situations in accordance with policy, and the ability to accept individual differences among children.

Job Goal

Under occasional supervision, performs specialized work by assisting teachers in instructing and directing the activities of students in the assigned classroom to provide a well‑organized, smoothly functioning classroom environment. Assists school administrators and staff with various administrative and clerical functions as requested.

Principal

Performance Responsibilities

  • Assist students with assignments as instructed by the teacher.
  • Work in small groups on classroom activities under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Participate in staff development training workshops to learn and update skills related to the position.
  • Perform other classroom duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Physical Requirements

Requires light work that involves walking, bending, or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations. Must have the ability to physically restrain a student if called upon to do so after proper training. May also be required to lift up to 50 pounds on occasion.

Terms of Employment

185 days based on Classified Salary Schedule Grade 7 or Grade 8 (Associate’s Degree or higher).

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provision of the Board’s Policy.
