Our Integrated Mental Health and Substance Misuse Service at HMP Dovegate is looking for a dynamic and experienced Substance Misuse Recovery Worker. The team is innovative, forward‑thinking and committed to a recovery‑focused approach that meets people’s needs. You will be part of a supportive team with effective management, supervision and guidance.
Working with people who have complex offending backgrounds, substance misuse and mental health needs within prison is both challenging and rewarding. This is a fantastic chance to make a positive difference to the lives of people who are often disadvantaged and vulnerable.
Essential Likeness Criteria
- Passionate about providing high quality substance misuse interventions, care and support.
- Skilled and experienced in providing evidence‑based psychosocial structured interventions geared towards supporting people to make positive changes and work towards recovery from drug and alcohol use.
- Highly motivated with the ability to support and inspire.
- Able to apply skills/interventions to the care of people with mild to moderate mental health needs that often co‑exist with substance misuse needs.
Main duties of the job
- Provide low‑, medium‑ and high‑intensity psychosocial substance‑misuse interventions as part of the Integrated Mental Health and Substance Misuse Team to those experiencing substance‑misuse problems.
- Work in a custodial environment delivering a high‑quality drug and alcohol recovery service in response to need.
- Motivate and support people to achieve recovery and positive outcomes within a recovery‑oriented substance‑misuse treatment service.
- Collaborate with clinical prescribing services to ensure the needs of each service user are met.
- Deliver a drug and alcohol recovery service (incorporating assessment, recovery planning, casework coordination and psychosocial interventions) to people located within the prison establishment.

As a Substance Misuse Recovery Worker you will provide evidence‑based psychological and psychosocial interventions to support service users to make positive changes and move towards recovery. You will work in a fully multi‑disciplinary team, deliver varied and comprehensive interventions in line with a stepped‑care model, and assist service users to progress through their sentence and onto resettlement in the community.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care (or commitment to work towards) and/or relevant experience in a comparable setting.
- Relevant training/qualification in an associated field, e.g., CBT, Motivational Interviewing, Brief Solution‑Focused Therapy, Mapping Techniques, Auricular Acupuncture training, SMART Recovery.
Experience
- Experience of integrated working practices.
- 12 months minimum experience working with substance users.
- Experience of group facilitation.
