BNSSG Integrated Care Board is looking for a Research Delivery Support to join our supportive and collaborative Research Team. This is an exciting opportunity to work with researchers, clinicians, universities and health and care organisations across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire to support the delivery of high‑quality research.

You will play an important role in supporting research governance processes, helping researchers navigate Health Research Authority (HRA) approvals and NHS assurance requirements, and ensuring studies are managed efficiently and safely across our system.

This role would suit someone with strong administrative and communication skills who enjoys working with a wide range of stakeholders and managing multiple priorities.

Main duties of the job

  • Support researchers with research governance and approval processes
  • Provide advice and guidance on HRA approval and NHS assurance requirements
  • Maintain research databases and monitoring systems
  • Organise meetings, events and documentation including agendas and minutes
  • Work closely with NHS organisations, universities and regional research networks
  • Contribute to reports, guidance documents and standard operating procedures
  • Support communication and knowledge sharing across the research community
  • Assist with training and induction activities within the team

You will work closely with the Research Delivery Officer and the wider Research Team to help ensure research is delivered effectively across the BNSSG system.

You may already have experience in research governance, NHS administration, higher education or project support, or you may have transferable skills and a willingness to learn.

Job responsibilities

  • Advise and support internal and external researchers making applications for research approval across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board (ICB) and other Trusts/Organisations (Primary Care, Public Health, Community Care and Social Care) as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with members of the team to cover the Research function.
  • Liaise with the South West Regional Research Delivery Network (RRDN) to provide a coordinated approach to Research Governance across the South west.
  • Represent and promote the Research function on Committees in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB as agreed.
  • Facilitate communication with relevant stakeholders to support implementation of research findings in line with the team’s Knowledge Mobilisation Strategy.
  • Liaise with relevant departments in the ICB and University departments on research related matters (Research passports and letters of access, financial reporting, Caldicott and Data Protection Act principles etc.).
  • Attend external meetings, events, and conferences as a representative of the Research team as agreed.
  • Organise meetings or events and assist in the diary management requirements of individuals in connection with portfolio of work, ensure delivery of minutes, notes and papers, etc.
  • Develop and maintain systems to ensure that research governance criteria are fulfilled before the relevant assurance for research is given.
  • Assist with the production of a range of written material including agendas, minutes, guidelines, pro‑formas, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Communicate information and issues, including briefings and reports, as appropriate.
  • Administer, monitor, and evaluate research management and governance processes within the Research team.
  • Administer and maintain an accurate database of research studies approved by the Research team.
  • Contribute to reporting to the RRDN as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the website for the Research team and other online resources.
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in Research Governance in particular, engagement with Health Research Authority (HRA) approval and Research Delivery Network guidance.
  • Deputise for the Research Governance Officer as appropriate (commensurate with the banding of this post).
  • Provide training, advice and support on own area of responsibility.
  • Support training and induction of new and existing staff.

Person Specification

Knowledge, Training and Experience

  • Educated to degree level in relevant subject or equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level in specialist area.
  • Knowledge of administrative procedures, database management and operation.
  • Experience of office systems.
  • Familiarity with academic research processes or ability to quickly learn and able to engage with academics.
  • Willingness to learn about research processes in the NHS and wider health and care settings.
  • Familiarity with the NHS and primary care systems and able to engage with clinicians in primary and secondary care (or able to quickly develop these skills).
  • Knowledge of NHS R&D, especially research governance or equivalent experience and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to use electronic sources (Internet, Intranet, and e‑mail) to disseminate and obtain information.
  • Able to develop spreadsheets and use other tools for reporting purposes.
  • Ability to prepare, analyse and interpret complex data with good attention to detail.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with researchers from academic and clinical environments.
  • Tact and diplomacy skills: ability to remain calm under pressure, e.g. conveying information to researchers that may be different to their expectations.

  • Problem‑solving skills and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to re‑prioritise.
  • Able to work under time pressure, with extremely accurate attention to detail.
