Public Law Department Background

The Public Law team handles both publicly and privately funded work, including civil liberties, judicial review claims, and immigration matters.

Main Responsibilities of the Role

  • Report directly to the Department Director
  • Responsible for all aspects of Public Law work, providing technical expertise and guidance to team members
  • Manage and supervise Solicitors, Trainee Solicitors and Caseworkers, ensuring appropriate caseloads and complexities
  • Assist with delivery of training and development within the department
  • Handle a range of Public Law matters including unlawful detention, false imprisonment, abuse by detention staff, removal notices, NHS & local authority challenges, and immigration tribunal decisions
  • Prepare and manage funding applications to the Legal Aid Agency
  • Draft documents such as witness statements, evidence, application forms, indexes of documents and letters of representation
  • Attend conferences and court proceedings
  • Maintain a professional, pro‑active approach with strong client care skills and interest in business development and marketing

Key Skills Required

  • Valid Practising Certificate at the time of applying
  • Commitment to providing an excellent standard of service to clients
  • Team‑player with a positive, supportive culture and ability to cross‑refer within the firm
  • Previous supervisory experience and achievement of key performance indicators
  • Excellent client care skills, especially with vulnerable clients and complex public law cases
  • Strong networking and communication skills for business development and new‑business generation
  • Working knowledge of the Legal Aid Guidance for Public Law matters and ability to service privately funded cases
  • Extensive experience in all Public Law work (advocacy and non‑advocacy)
  • Advance IT skills – familiarity with Microsoft Office and document management
