Locum Consultant in Community Paediatrics

Grade YM73 – Part time (8 sessions per week) – 6‑month fixed term contract (pending substantive recruitment).

Location: Northern Health Centre, Upper Holloway, Islington, London

Salary: £113,565 – £150,569 per annum (pro rata for part‑time)

Consultant Community Paediatrician – fill a recently vacated post.

Duties

  • Neurodevelopmental clinics: 3 community clinics per month – one multidisciplinary clinic for children with posture and movement conditions (PD clinic) not yet in special needs schools, and two standard clinics a month.
  • ASD diagnostic clinic (1PA) – part of the Social Communication Team, participate in the MDT diagnostic process.
  • CP second on call (2 hours per call) – fortnightly on Wednesdays.
  • SPA (1.5 PA) CPD – departmental meetings, mandatory training and own appraisal.
  • Named doctor for safeguarding, if taken up – 2 PA (reduces community clinic commitment).

Qualifications

  • MB BS or equivalent; MRCP/MRCPCH or equivalent.
  • CCT (or equivalent), or within 6 months of CT date, or entry on the Specialist Register for Paediatrics.
  • Evidence of being within 6 months of CCT date and expected to achieve a CCT.
  • BSc in medical subject, PhD, MD, MSc, DCH.
  • CCT in Paediatric Neurodisability.

Clinical Experience and Skills

  • Working in a multidisciplinary Child Development team and performing comprehensive developmental assessments.
  • Managing common problems in children with ADHD, Autism, epilepsy and physical neurodisability.
  • Minimum Level 3 Children Protection competence – assessing safeguarding concerns and providing supervision.
  • Managing common general paediatric problems – acute and chronic.
  • Substantial clinical experience in paediatric neurodisability and epilepsy; managing children with complex health needs.

Teaching

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience.
  • Additional teaching qualifications.
  • Collaborative multidisciplinary teamwork, sharing experience and providing support.
  • Experience in interagency team working.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, communicating health information socially and educationally.
  • Leadership qualities – building relationships, influencing, negotiating, political astuteness, conflict management.
  • Ability to analyze holistic health chronologies and produce comprehensive reports for care‑experienced children.

Management Ability

  • Administrative tasks (e.g., writing complex reports for court, annual reports) effectively.
  • Excellent organisational and time‑management skills.
  • Supervising junior staff.
  • Completion of a recognised leadership course.

Clinical Governance

  • Completed audit and service improvement projects.
  • Experience in NHS complaint handling and clinical incident reporting.
  • Training and experience in appraisal.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and its application to the Named Doctor role.

Personal Skills

  • Decision making and judgement.
  • Adaptability and flexibility.
  • Building relationships, influence, negotiation.
  • Training in communication skills, counselling, educational supervision.

Safeguarding Children and Adults

  • Familiarity with and compliance to London Child Protection Procedures and protocols.
  • Familiarity with London Multi‑Agency Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults procedures.
  • Compliance with local information‑sharing protocols.
  • Knowledge of appropriate contact numbers and reporting lines.
  • Participation in required training and supervision.
  • Compliance with professional boundaries and codes of conduct.
