Medical Laboratory Assistant – Overview
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is delighted to offer an opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Assistant to join the Biochemistry service within North Glasgow. This role is vital to the safe and effective delivery of laboratory services, supporting clinical decision‑making through accurate pre‑analytical sample preparation.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
- Location: Glasgow Royal Infirmary
- Full‑time, permanent
- Shift Pattern: Dayshift, backshift, weekend mornings
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, identify, and prepare patient specimens accurately in line with standard operating procedures
- Centrifuge separate aliquot and dilute samples in preparation for analysis
- Operate laboratory equipment and systems, including Telepath and sample storage systems
- Maintain a clean, safe, and compliant reception and laboratory environment
- Prioritise workload effectively while working as part of a busy laboratory team
- Respond to telephone and in‑person enquiries in a professional and courteous manner
- Participate in shift rotas, including evening and weekend working as required
Knowledge, Training, Qualifications and Experience
- Relevant educational qualification such as Highers including Chemistry or Biology or equivalent science‑based award
- Evidence of good numeracy and literacy skills
- Ability to work accurately and consistently in a high‑volume laboratory environment
- Basic IT skills with good keyboard accuracy and attention to detail
- Strong communication skills, including a confident and professional telephone manner
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team while following strict protocols
- Willingness to undertake vocational training and ongoing development within laboratory services
