Job Overview

Healthcare Support Worker – Theatre Departments at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist the surgical team during procedures, including circulating, setting up, and ensuring availability of necessary equipment.
  • Maintain the theatre environment to support safety, efficiency, and the well‑being of patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Support training in the initial phase of the role, working alongside an experienced staff member and becoming independent when ready.
  • Attend to a variety of theatre shifts – early, late, long days and night – and cover a minimum of 23 hours per week at full flexibility.
  • Assist with the recovery and day‑surgery units, where relevant.

Working Conditions

Shifts are 24/7 and cover all theatres, including 24/7 emergency obstetric and gynaecology services and day‑surgery beds open from 7:30‑10 pm.

Essential Criteria

  • Completed care certificate or ability to complete within 6 months of appointment.
  • Completed secondary education.
  • Ability to move and handle patients and equipment.
  • Evidence of empathy, patience, and dependability.
  • Ability to deal with a range of difficult situations.
  • Be able to take instruction and work within the role’s confines.
  • Ability to cope with fluctuating demands and pressures.
  • Be aware of and adhere to the care certificate standards (https://www.hee.nhs.uk/our-work/care-certificate).
  • Capable of completing core HCSW competencies and additional specific competencies related to area of work within 12 months of appointment.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in an acute hospital setting.
  • Experience as a nursing home carer.
  • Experience as a teaching assistant.
  • HCA experience.
  • Volunteer sector experience.
  • Experience in a caring role.
