The role

We are looking for a passionate, dynamic, ambitious registered nurse to join our skin cancer team. The successful applicant will attain the knowledge and skills to diagnose and treat various types of skin cancer in the secondary care setting. Fully funded training at a master’s degree, level 11, will be provided. Courses include Clinical Assessment and bespoke Skin Cancer Module, as well as Research. A primary degree is essential.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

  • Location based in Glasgow Royal Infirmary
  • Permanent Contract
  • Full-time contract (36 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern Monday to Friday (08:00 to 16:00)

Key responsibilities

  • The CNS will be expected to lead and manage their own nurse-led clinics at various hospital sites within the West of Scotland. They will perform advanced and autonomous comprehensive physical examinations to assess skin cancer patients, diagnose new skin cancers and metastatic disease, and plan and initiate medical and nursing care to achieve patient‑centred outcomes.
  • The CNS will refer patients to Consultants and the relevant MDT for further management planning, as appropriate.
  • The CNS will discuss treatment options in depth with patients, with sensitivity, knowledge and expertise.
  • The CNS will anticipate skin cancer patients’ emotional and physical care needs and refer to the appropriate service to ensure optimum holistic care is provided.
  • The CNS will refer skin patients to the appropriate local or regional skin cancer MDT, providing clinical advice to the MDT and acting as patient advocate. They will contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of care pathways and will be confident in public speaking at the regional MDT.
  • The Plastic Surgery CNS service is regional to the West of Scotland; the CNS must have a full driving licence to travel to Greater Glasgow, Ayrshire and Arran, and Lanarkshire healthboard sites.
  • Practice within the Legal & Ethical framework established by the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) and National Legislation to ensure patient interests and wellbeing are met.
  • Work within NHS, NHS Greater Glasgow, and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Legislation, Policy, Guidelines and Procedures.
  • Create academic links with appropriate higher education institutions, continuing the development of pre and post registration teaching within the speciality.
  • Evaluate practice using a range of research methods.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

  • First Level Registered Nurse with a minimum of 5 years post registration experience.
  • 5 years experience in area of speciality and appropriate post registration qualification/relevant experience.
  • Ability to fulfil criteria outlined in the job description.
  • As appropriate, successfully complete the agreed training pathway to develop CNS in skin cancer role.
  • Advanced Clinical Assessment and decision making in acute and primary care (15 credits).
  • Advanced Skill and Innovative Practice Masters Module (30 credits).
  • Pathophysiology.
  • Supervised clinical practice and ongoing training to meet agreed practitioner competency requirements.
