Job Description:

Vertex Associates are proud to be partnering with a leading London-based construction business in hiring a Financial Controller on a permanent basis. This is a hybrid position which consists of 4 days per week in the office, and 1 day per week from home (choice of day).

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Own the end-to-end finance function (financial accounting, management accounting, AP/AR, payroll liaison, cash, tax and reporting)
  • Lead the monthly close to a clear timetable: post/review journals, review P&L and balance sheet, complete reconciliations and deliver management accounts with commentary
  • Produce monthly management account pack (KPI dashboards, margin analysis, forecast where relevant)
  • Build and run the annual budget and rolling forecast processes, partnering with operational leaders to challenge assumptions and improve forecast accuracy
  • Manage cashflow forecasting and working capital: optimise billing/collections, supplier payments, retention, and ensure adequate liquidity and banking compliance
  • Maintain and enhance financial controls: delegated authority matrix, procurement-to-pay controls, reconciliations, audit trails and segregation of duties
  • Assist with external audit
  • Own tax compliance and reporting: VAT returns, CIS administration/returns, PAYE/benefits liaison, and support corporation tax computations with advisers
  • Oversee subcontractor invoice processing and approvals, ensuring accurate coding, contract compliance and timely payment runs
  • Support commercial decision-making: pricing/margin reviews, business cases, investment appraisal, contract review and risk/opportunity analysis
  • Own and improve finance systems (Sage/ERP/reporting tools): master data governance, controls configuration, user access, and reporting automation
  • Coach and develop the finance team, setting clear objectives, embedding best practice, and ensuring service levels to the wider business

Requirements:

  • Qualified accountant: ACA, ACCA, or CIMA
  • Strong financial leadership with proven experience running an end-to-end finance function in a £50m+ turnover business
  • Advanced financial acumen and analytical capability: ability to interpret complex data, identify drivers, and translate insight into action
  • Strong technical accounting and statutory reporting knowledge (UK GAAP/IFRS as applicable), including audit coordination and balance sheet governance
  • Solid understanding of UK tax and compliance (VAT, CIS, PAYE and regulatory reporting), with a strong control mindset
  • Commercial partnering skills with ability to influence senior stakeholders, challenge constructively and support strategic decisions
  • Treasury and working capital management capability, including cashflow forecasting and liquidity planning
  • Process improvement and systems expertise (Sage/ERP/BI tools), with experience driving automation, standardisation and scalable ways of working
  • Excellent attention to detail, with high standards for accuracy, documentation and audit trail
  • Advanced Excel and strong proficiency with financial systems
  • Strong communicator with ability to present financial information clearly to non-finance audiences
  • Highly organised, resilient and proactive; able to prioritise, meet tight deadlines, and handle confidential information with discretion

Rates of pay and salary ranges are dependent upon your experience, qualifications and training.
