Job Overview

We are looking for a motivated and compassionate nurse to join our supportive and forward-thinking Skin Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team at the RUH. This is an exciting opportunity to develop into an autonomous CNS role within a service that values collaboration, learning, and delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.

This post is offered as a developmental Band 6 to Band 7 position, with a clearly defined pathway to CNS level through competency-based progression, structured education, and strong clinical supervision. As a CNS you will build meaningful relationships with patients and their families, offering continuity, reassurance, and expert guidance at every stage. You will work closely with dermatology, oncology, primary care, and the wider MDT, contributing to a truly integrated and patient-focused service.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as a key worker for patients with skin cancer, providing holistic, person-centered care across the patient pathway
  • Deliver nurse-led clinics and support patients from diagnosis through treatment, follow-up, and surveillance
  • Provide specialist clinical advice, education, and psychological support to patients and their families
  • Undertake holistic assessment, care planning, and evaluation of care needs
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients and carers
  • Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and across organisational boundaries
  • Support patient self-management and signpost to appropriate services
  • Contribute to service development, quality improvement, and patient experience initiatives
  • Participate in audit, research, and implementation of evidence-based practice
  • Support education and development of staff, acting as a role model and facilitator

Qualifications & Training

  • Experience in dermatology/oncology/palliative care
  • Registered Nurse with NMC registration
  • Teaching qualification or working towards
  • Physical Assessment and Clinical Reasoning qualification with competence in lymph node examination
  • Non-medical prescribing

  • Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of audit process, research and evidence-based practice
  • Ability to manage complex and emotionally challenging situations
  • Experience of managing a complex CNS caseload
  • Ability to critically analyse research and evidence-based practice
  • Highly developed leadership skills

Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience of multi-prosessional working
  • Knowledge of cancer pathways and targets
  • Experience coordinating patient care
  • Previous experience of working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Advanced skills in skin lesion recognition, including competent use of dermoscopy in clinical practice
  • Experience to practice autonomously and lead service development
  • Evidence of advanced communication skills
