Role Overview
Data Scientists at Booking.com take ownership of the design and delivery of data‑science solutions, from ideation to implementation. They work independently on data consumption, preparation, and the translation of business problems into data stories, applying suitable statistical methods to solve complex business challenges. They engage stakeholders, communicate complex analysis, mentor junior team members, and influence business decisions within their area.
Job Responsibilities and Duties
- Own the design and delivery of entire data‑science solutions based on business requirements, bringing them from initial idea to independent implementation.
- Work autonomously on consuming and preparing data, translating business problems to data stories, and solving them with appropriate statistical analysis and modeling methods.
- Operate primarily within the team scope to deliver work that informs product or business decisions, occasionally collaborating across multiple teams.
- Design and interpret quantitative experiments to guide key business decisions.
- Identify and manage stakeholders in operational, project‑based, and managerial roles; communicate findings clearly and guide junior colleagues in stakeholder engagement.
- Adopt existing internal and external data‑science approaches, propose and spot opportunities to apply new methods, and expand technical competencies of self and peers.
- Incorporate scalability, reproducibility, and long‑term orientation into work to maximize impact.
- Act as a force multiplier by coaching, mentoring, and setting a strong example for junior peers.
- Contribute to the community through projects that enhance data‑professional effectiveness and support community strengthening activities such as recruitment.
- Stay knowledgeable about the larger data ecosystem at Booking.com and its relevance to their work.
- Collaborate with related crafts (e.g., Data Engineering) to anticipate data needs and ensure smooth project progress.
- Maintain awareness of the operational, tactical, and strategic goals of their track or vertical, and have high‑level knowledge of the business unit goals.
- Ensure the quality of their work through peer review.
- Influence business decisions within their specific area.
Role Qualifications and Requirements
- Master’s degree.
- 3 to 5 years of broad job knowledge in data science or related field.
Nice‑to‑Have Skills
- Experience solving real problems using data mining techniques and with statistical rigor.
- Strong technical skills in data analysis, statistics, machine learning and programming; working knowledge of Hadoop, Spark, SQL, Python, and/or R.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Strong ability to translate business problems into data problems.
- Strong data visualization and storytelling skills.
- Deep knowledge of statistics and experimentation.
- Strong knowledge of data management, engineering, pipelines, and workflows.
- Understanding of the possibilities and limitations of various data‑analysis and data‑science modeling approaches.
