Priority Waste Driver / Operative

Belfast City Council

Wage: £13.35 p/h

Hours of work: Tues – Sat, 6:30 – 14:30

Belfast City Council is seeking motivated and reliable individuals to join our City Services (Resources and Fleet) team as a Priority Waste Driver / Operative.

This is an important frontline role supporting the cleanliness, safety, and appearance of Belfast through priority waste collection, cleansing operations, and environmental services.

The Role

Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Transport and Priority Waste, successful candidates will be responsible for:

    Driving council vehicles and operating safely within daily routes and schedules

    Collecting and transporting priority waste including bulky household items, fridge freezers, and recyclable materials

    Carrying out priority cleansing duties including:

      Street cleansing

      Graffiti and fly-poster removal

      Gum removal

      Street furniture washing

      Land clearance and street washing

    Supporting general waste collection and street cleansing services when required

    Completing all relevant paperwork, driver checks, and incident reporting documentation

    Ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation and council procedures

    Working effectively as part of an operational team in a public-facing environment

    Assisting with emergency and seasonal duties including snow clearance and gritting operations

Essential Criteria

Applicants must, by the closing date:

    Hold a full current Category C1 driving licence

    Hold a valid Driver CPC Qualification Card

    Demonstrate at least 6 months’ experience in:

      Driving within a commercial or public sector environment

      Dealing directly with members of the public

Applicants must also successfully complete a driving assessment as part of the recruitment process.

    A professional and positive approach when dealing with the public

Desirable Advantage

Candidates with at least 1 year’s commercial or public sector driving experience may be prioritised at shortlist stage.
