Overview

AtkinsRéalis Building Design Practice is looking to appoint a Fire Engineer to develop their career within a forward‑thinking multi‑sector practice. The role will involve working as part of a national practice of design professionals delivering fire engineering design solutions to clients across a wide variety of sectors including Cities & Development, Commercial, Energy, Residential and Transportation. The position is based primarily in Derby and London, with flexibility to work from Bristol, Epsom, Glasgow, London, or Derby.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a range of sectors, from residential buildings through rail transportation or new energy facilities.
  • Manage multiple engineering projects from inception through delivery, supporting fire safety standards and codes.
  • Support delivery of project work within time and cost budgets.
  • Keep up to date with regulations and legislation.
  • Develop fire engineering solutions on projects and ensure the fire engineering strategy is delivered.
  • Assess fire‑related risks in projects and work collaboratively to mitigate where possible.
  • Review and comment on the quality of fire safety‑related installations.
  • Undertake tenders for new work.
  • Prepare reports, take part in design team meetings, and liaise with client representatives as required.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree, preferably in fire engineering, or a postgraduate qualification in fire engineering. Candidates with other relevant backgrounds are considered.
  • Strong record of successfully delivering fire safety projects. Experience in other sectors strongly considered.
  • Experience with fire standards including BS 9999, NFPA 130, BS 9992, EN 45545.
  • Fire modelling experience is beneficial.
  • Experience outside the building sector is an advantage.
  • Ability to work towards Chartered Fire Engineer status.
  • Flexible approach to the working environment and willingness to travel is a positive advantage.
  • Good commercial awareness and a customer‑focused mindset.
  • Ability to collate information and write clear, structured reports.

Additional information

Security clearance may be required. Offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. The vetting process is delivered by United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV) and may require proof of residency in the UK for 5 years or longer.
