Overview
Applications are invited for the post of Corneal Fellow in Ophthalmology at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre. The post offers opportunities to gain subspecialty and research experience in complex corneal and external eye disease. The fellow will work with five corneal consultants and will be exposed to tertiary level care of a wide range of medical and surgical ophthalmic cases in a busy regional eye centre.
There are 2 posts available — a 12‑month post starting in May 2026 and a 12‑month post starting in mid September 2026.
Main duties
The programme includes Corneal and Ocular Surface Subspecialty clinic sessions as well as opportunities to attend specialist theatres. The post is full‑time and non‑resident. The Corneal Fellow will be required to participate in out of hours on‑call commitment.
Qualifications and requirements
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent
- Parts 3 MRCOphth, Part 2 FRCOphth (or equivalent international qualification)
Desirable
- Intercalated BMedSc or equivalent
- MSc, MD, MPhil, PhD
- CCT or equivalent international qualification
GMC requirement
Essential
- Full GMC Registration
Clinical experience
Essential
- Completed core curriculum training in ophthalmology in the UK (or equivalent international qualification)
- Previous corneal and external diseases training
- Able to take a detailed medical history, carry out a full medical examination and arrive at a differential diagnosis
- Able to manage common medical and eye emergencies
- Surgical and laser experience
Desirable
- Previous advanced sub‑specialty training opportunity or fellowship in corneal and external diseases
