Stonemason Role

This is a varied role working across heritage, ecclesiastical restoration and conservation projects on historic buildings. We welcome applications from both banker stonemasons and fixer masons. Depending on your experience and preference, your work may focus on workshop-based banker masonry, site-based fixing work, or a combination of both.

  • Shaping, carving, and finishing natural stone including Portland stone, limestone, sandstone, and granite
  • Producing both textured and polished finishes using traditional and modern techniques
  • Working from drawings, templates, and detailed design specifications
  • Constructing and reinstating masonry using both traditional methods and specialist repair materials
  • Installing indents, replacement stonework, and remedial repairs to existing structures
  • Carrying out sensitive restoration work on historic, ecclesiastical and listed buildings
  • Reproducing historic detailing and ensuring repairs blend sympathetically with existing fabric
  • Working safely with hand and power tools in workshop and site environments
  • Operating on construction and heritage sites both indoors and outdoors throughout the year
  • Collaborating effectively with colleagues while also being confident working independently

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Proven experience within stonemasonry, conservation, or heritage restoration
  • Experience as either a banker mason, fixer mason, or both
  • Strong understanding of traditional masonry techniques and materials
  • Experience working with sandstone, limestone, granite, brick, terracotta, and lime mortars
  • Excellent attention to detail and pride in producing high-quality workmanship
  • Confidence working at height and handling heavy materials safely
  • A professional and reliable approach to work
  • The ability to interpret drawings and produce accurate work from templates
  • A genuine appreciation for historic buildings and conservation standards

Experience working on heritage and listed buildings, conservation projects, or works carried out in line with the principles of Historic England would be highly advantageous.
