Make a real difference to people’s lives and homes

Are you passionate about improving housing conditions and helping people live in safe, warm homes? We’re looking for a motivated and detail-oriented person to join our Private Sector Housing Team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to start or develop a career in housing standards, working alongside experienced professionals while gaining valuable knowledge, qualifications, and hands‑on experience.

The role

You’ll play a key role in supporting the team to ensure homes in the private rented sector meet legal standards. You’ll be the first point of contact for residents, providing guidance and helping to resolve housing concerns.

You’ll also contribute to inspections, data analysis and wider projects aimed at tackling poor housing conditions and bringing empty homes back into use.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting Housing Standards Officers with casework and enforcement processes
  • Accompanying officers on property inspections, including assessing housing hazards
  • Assisting with inspections of houses in multiple occupation (HMOs)
  • Processing licences, notices, and other legal documentation
  • Providing advice to tenants, landlords, and property professionals on housing standards
  • Maintaining accurate records and updating internal systems and web content
  • Analysing and presenting data using graphs, charts, and visual tools
  • Supporting projects such as empty homes initiatives and Disabled Facilities Grants
  • Assisting with preparation of evidence for legal proceedings

About you

You will bring a positive, proactive approach, strong interpersonal skills, and a willingness to learn and develop within the role.

You will need:

  • Experience of delivering good customer service.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage your workload
  • Good IT skills, including working with data and producing visual reports
  • Five passes at GCSE (ie Grade 4 or equivalent) including English Language.

Development Opportunities

We’re committed to supporting your career progression. You’ll be encouraged and supported to:

  • Work towards a recognised qualification in housing or environmental health
  • Gain a Certificate of Competence in the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS)
  • Become a member of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH)

What we can offer you

In return, we offer a supportive, forward‑thinking working environment and a strong package of benefits, including:

  • A generous annual leave entitlement of 29 days (rising to 33 days after 5 years’ service), plus 8 bank holidays
  • A casual car user allowance
  • Flexible, family friendly and hybrid working policies available
  • Access to training, learning and continuous professional development
  • Free workplace parking across the Borough
  • Option to join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) plus access to a salary sacrifice scheme for added voluntary pension contributions
  • Discounted leisure membership through the Fit for Work scheme
