Senior Midwife – Community

We are excited to recruit a Senior Midwife to join our Community Midwifery leadership team at United Hospital Beds of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. You will lead clinical and professional activity, influence service delivery, and support the management team in shaping how community midwifery is delivered across our trust.
Main duties of the job
As a senior midwife you will ensure women, birthing people, babies and families receive safe, clinically effective, individualized care. You will lead by example, offer expert clinical advice, manage and support teams and the home‑birth service, and uphold Trust policies and values. You will oversee staff well‑being, conduct appraisals, manage attendance, and support inclusion and compassion across teams. You will allocate resources, roster staff, and manage budgets to maintain a safe workforce. You will deliver quality improvement initiatives in line with the Maternity and Neonatal Improvement Programme and the national maternity agenda.

Person Specification
Education, Training & Qualifications
- NMC registration
- Significant post‑registration experience
- Demonstrated competence at band 6
- Evidence of a degree or higher, or equivalent experience
Experience & Knowledge
- Experience mentoring, supporting, coaching and developing staff
- Demonstrated management/leadership skills acquired through practice and theory
- Specific knowledge of the clinical area/specialty
- Experience in teaching and nurturing development of staff
Skills & Ability
- Ability to implement and embed change
- Accountability for delegated nursing care within the team
- Risk assessment and appropriate action management
- Driving licence and access to a car
- Managing clinical workload, prioritising and re‑prioritising effectively
- Developing policies and procedures for a defined clinical area
- Ability to work across divisions during unit cover and deputising for the matron
