This role is ideal for someone looking to gain paid, hands‑on experience in a school‑based setting while working towards a career in Clinical Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or Education.

You will work closely with pupils who have non-verbal communication needs, Down syndrome, visual impairments, and mobility challenges (including children who use wheelchairs) – providing invaluable experience for future therapeutic or psychological practice.

About the Role

This position is well suited to individuals who are patient, adaptable, and observant – especially when supporting students who require multi-sensory approaches, positioning and mobility support, alternative communication methods, and consistent emotional regulation strategies.

Pupils may present with a range of needs, including:

  • Non-verbal communication (AAC, Makaton, PECS)
  • Down syndrome (learning delays, speech and language needs)
  • Visual impairments (environmental adaptations, tactile support)
  • Physical disabilities (wheelchair users, postural management)

Both full-time and part-time positions are available.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils aged 5–19 with complex SEND, including non-verbal pupils, Down syndrome, visual impairments, and physical disabilities
  • Support children who use wheelchairs, including mobility assistance and positioning where required
  • Use AAC strategies (e.g., Makaton, PECS, communication boards, eye-gaze technology) to support non-verbal learners
  • Adapt learning materials for pupils with visual impairments (e.g., large print, tactile resources, audio descriptions)
  • Support the delivery of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) with a focus on communication, physical, and sensory goals
  • Encourage communication, engagement, and independence in a safe, accessible environment
  • Work alongside Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Clinical Psychologists – ideal for career development
  • Help create a calm, structured, and inclusive learning environment

Who We’re Looking For

  • Aspiring Clinical Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, or Occupational Therapists seeking relevant SEND experience
  • Individuals with patience, empathy, and a non-judgemental approach
  • Strong communication skills – both verbal and non-verbal
  • Willingness to support with personal care if required (e.g., toileting, feeding, dressing)
  • Confidence supporting children with wheelchairs, visual impairments, and learning disabilities
  • Ability to work proactively, both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • An Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply)

What We Offer

  • £108–£115 per day – competitive daily rate
  • Free allocated parking near the school
  • Meaningful impact supporting young people with complex needs in Haringey
  • Excellent experience for Clinical Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, and Occupational Therapy career pathways
  • Flexible working hours – full-time or part-time
  • Opportunity to work alongside therapists and psychologists in a specialist setting
