An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Cancer Services department for the role of Cancer MDT Coordinator at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The post is based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital with potential cross cover at Lewisham.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will ensure that all assigned Cancer MDT is managed and coordinated effectively and is responsible for maintaining consistently tracked suspect cancer pathways to a high standard.
This role involves navigating patients through their pathways to treatment or discharge, ensuring that all patients are escalated in a timely manner to managers & clinical teams when needed and coordinating the preparation and chairing of MDM meetings, with the aim of improving the care and experience of cancer patients treated within the Trust.
Experience within cancer services and knowledge of Cancer Waiting Times guidance and working knowledge of Somerset would be desirable as well as a good understanding of patient pathway navigation and MDT management/coordination.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Job Summary:
- Coordinate the Trust Multi‑disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings and provide administrative support.
- Coordinate specialist inter‑Trust Multidisciplinary Team meetings (SMDT) via videoconferencing.
- Collect and register all patients diagnosed with cancer using Trust’s Cancer Information System.
- Track all patients referred with an urgent, suspected cancer and all patients with a positive diagnosis of cancer at Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust.
- Ensure patients who risk breaching the two‑week wait, 31‑ or 62‑day cancer waiting time targets are identified and presented at MDT meetings.
- Manage individual pathways within the MDT forum to minimise or eliminate delays.
- Develop good communication channels with the Cancer Centre.
Main Responsibilities:
- Co‑ordinate the list of patients for Trust/Specialist MDT meetings, including incidental findings and relevant reports.
- Add cancer waiting time dates to the list for MDT members.
- Provide cover for other MDT coordinators during leave.
- Track all relevant referrals, pathology, and inpatient reports.
- Prospectively monitor patient journey times.
- Link potential breaches with the Cancer Multidisciplinary Team Coordinators for discussion at meetings.
- Develop management plans for each identified patient to meet waiting time targets and improve patient experience.
- Implement a robust system to collect and monitor information.
- Ensure completeness of cancer waiting times data.
- Produce monthly breach analysis reports.
- Collate internal and external information and liaise with relevant MDT members.
- Set up video conferencing for all SMDT meetings.
- Record MDT attendance and complete attendance details.
- File MDT Management plans in patient notes.
- Record audit quality treatment data for Cancer Reform Strategy, Thames Cancer Registry, and National Audits.
- Support Cancer teams in retrieving missing data to ensure accuracy, consistency, and security.
- Ensure inter‑trust transfers (ITT) are sent within 38 days and tracked for target compliance.
- Provide breach reasons and analysis when necessary.
- Ensure all information is available to secretaries, managers and booking clerks.
- Highlight capacity issues to Trust’s management team.
- Escalate any delays and propose changes to management.
- Ensure patient notes are correctly tracked and available to the MDM.
External Responsibilities:
- Develop good communication channels with the Cancer Centre.
- Coordinate patient referral information to/from the Cancer Centre to reduce delays and prevent breaches.
Service Redesign:
- Work closely with the Service Improvement Facilitator to highlight potential breaches and areas for demand and capacity work, and possible service redesign.
General Responsibilities:
- Maintain awareness of the Data Protection Act and confidentiality responsibilities.
- Abide by all statutory, Trust and Care Group policies and procedures.
- Attend mandatory training courses as identified through supervision and performance review.
- Participate in individual performance reviews and regular supervision sessions.
Qualifications
- NVQ 4 or equivalent
- EDCL
- Knowledge of medical terminology
Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of patient administration systems (PiMS, iCare, etc.)
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Good time‑management and organisational skills
- High accuracy and proficiency in data entry
- Previous experience with Somerset (SCR) cancer data system
- Experience in an NHS or healthcare environment
Experience
- Experience of patient pathway navigation and escalation
- Experience of retrieving & interpreting information from databases
- Experience working within a healthcare environment
- Experience as an MDT coordinator/navigator or as part of a multidisciplinary team
Knowledge
- Understanding of cancer waiting time targets & patient pathways
