Decontamination Technician

We have a vacancy available for a part‑time (25 hours) Decontamination Technician to work with the Hospital’s Sterilisation and Disinfection Unit (HSDU) at the Royal Oldham Hospital, part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust.
Shift patterns: 5 pm – 10 pm, Monday to Friday.
The HSDU is responsible for the decontamination and sterilisation of invasive reusable medical devices. It is a purpose‑built facility and serves as the sterile services department for the organisation and beyond, ensuring that medical devices are made safe for use between each patient. The service is quality‑driven and in line with the department’s ISO 13485 accreditation.
The successful candidate will undertake decontamination science duties, assisting in the specialised decontamination and resupply of medical devices to contribute to the clinical care of patients and support the day‑to‑day operation of the decontamination services under limited supervision.
Main duties of the role
- Undertake decontamination science duties and assist the workforce of Decontamination Production Managers and Supervisors.
- Carry out receipt, disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, packing and sterilisation of reusable medical devices, recording all tasks in the Healthcare Science Information Systems database.
- Work in accordance with the department’s Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Management Systems.
- Plan workload independently with limited supervision.
- Expose to blood and body fluids as part of the role.
Qualifications
- GCSE in English, Maths and Science at Grade C or above, or a level 2 vocational qualification or equivalent knowledge.
Knowledge
- Working knowledge of keyboard, typing and computer skills.
- Knowledge and experience in decontamination or infection prevention.
Skills
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to work accurately under pressure.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work to Standard Operating Procedures.
Experience
- Experience applying concentration during repetitive tasks.
- Experience in a healthcare setting.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
This position is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and will require a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
£25,760 – £27,476 per annum pro‑rata.
