Higher Level Teaching Assistant – Tiverton School
We are seeking a dedicated, resilient, and compassionate Senior Support Staff (HLTA) member to join our Constructive Pathway classes. The role involves supporting pupils with complex autism spectrum disorder, severe communication needs and sensory processing differences in a nurturing, highly specialist environment.
Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with teachers and therapists to deliver highly personalised learning experiences.
- Support pupils with communication using approaches such as PECS, Makaton, AAC, and visual supports.
- Lead and support classroom support staff within the class team.
- Promote emotional regulation, independence, and positive behaviour strategies.
- Support with personal care, sensory regulation and therapeutic approaches throughout the school day.
- Create engaging, safe, and structured learning environments tailored to pupils’ individual needs.
- Build strong relationships with families and professionals to ensure consistent support for pupils.
Qualifications and Experience
- Experience working with children or young people with SEND, particularly those with autism and complex needs.
- Calm, patient, and able to respond positively in challenging situations.
- Understanding of communication, regulation, and sensory needs.
- Ability to lead by example and support colleagues within the classroom team.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the well‑being of all pupils.
- Relevant qualifications such as Level 4/HLTA (or willingness to work towards this) and previous SEND experience are desirable.
Working Hours
35 hours per week, 39 weeks per year.
Safeguarding and Checks
The successful candidate will be required to undertake an enhanced criminal record check via the DBS, relevant safeguarding and pre‑employment clearances, and provide two satisfactory references. A DBS check is mandatory as per Keeping Children Safe in Education.
