Position Overview
Science Technician – Newcastle High School for Girls – a private independent girls’ school, part of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST). This role is part‑time, term‑time, 2 days a week (14.4 hours). The position starts 1 September 2026. The salary is Grade 3: £27,171 – £30,720 per year (pro rata £8,861 – £10,019).
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, set out, test and clear equipment, apparatus, chemicals and materials for lessons and practicals, including cleaning surfaces, floors, sinks, workspaces and storage areas, and resetting adjustable items to default settings.
- Provide practical assistance to teachers during lessons, especially where additional supervision is required or equipment/process malfunctions occur.
- Assist pupils in safely using equipment, chemicals and materials, give demonstrations, and support completion of practical work, particularly for required practicals and safe storage for external examinations.
- Maintain protocols for standard practicals, keep records and readings as required by departmental, school, GDST and external guidance and best practice.
- Carry out regular inspections, housekeeping and checks to ensure all standing equipment (fixed AV, display screens, fume cupboards, gas guards, stills, autoclaves, dishwashers, fridges, etc.) and resources are ready for lesson use.
