About us
The Department of Geography is widely recognised as one of the leading geography departments in the world (5th worldwide in the QS Ranking 2026, 4th in the Shanghai world rankings 2025). It has been highly rated in all seven UK Research Assessment Exercises, and the 2021 REF confirmed that 96% of the Department’s research activity is considered World Leading (4*) or Internationally Excellent (3*).
UCL Department of Geography is looking for expressions of interest for Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (PGTAs) in the 2026/27 academic year.
We are looking for PGTAs to teach on a wide range of modules: PGTAs 2026-27 Module List (Advert).xlsx . Further information on each of the modules is available via UCL’s Module Catalogue (search by module code/name).
The purpose of this job is to support teaching and learning in our modules, working with the academic Module Convenor and the module’s teaching team. PGTAs will be given training in support of their roles.
Duties and responsibilities will vary depending on the module, but may include:
- Leading seminars and/or practical computer or lab sessions under the guidance of the Module Convenor. This will involve proactively contributing to the delivery of teaching, generating material for teaching and liaising with the Module Convenors and other members of the module’s teaching team (where appropriate) to share best practice and ensure consistency
- Supporting field-class activities (this may include travelling and staying away from home)
- Contributing to Moodle online learning facilities
- Marking student assessments, generating and providing feedback for students. Tailoring feedback as needed to ensure students clearly understand what is required of them
- Monitoring student attendance as directed by the administrative office, in accordance with institutional and departmental regulations, and upholding confidentiality in regard to student records
- Attend module-planning meetings and other ad hoc meetings as deemed necessary by the relevant Module Convenor, Director of Education, Head of Department or the PGTA Representative.
Please see the full job description and person specification linked at the bottom of this page for more information. Informal enquiries may be made to Prof. Ben Page, Director of Education (b.page@ucl.ac.uk).
If you have any queries regarding the application process, please contact Claire Betts, Department Manager (c.betts@ucl.ac.uk).
About you
Candidates must be educated to Masters degree level (or having equivalent experience), in a field related to the disciplinary area; be working towards a relevant postgraduate degree (PhD) and have demonstrated knowledge in the areas to be taught. Applicants must also demonstrate a commitment to high-quality teaching, and to fostering a positive learning environment for students.
How to apply
Applications must be made by 23:59, Sunday 21 st June 2026.
To apply, please:
1. Submit a formal application form below – click on “apply now”.
When making your application, please upload – as one PDF – your most recent C.V and include a covering letter that explains why you are interested in a PGTA position in the Department of Geography and how you meet the essential criteria required for this role.
As you submit your application, there will be a section that asks you to “tell us why you have applied for this role”. Please ignore this and simply add “see covering letter attached”.
On this form, you are asked to select up to three themes that best align with your research and experience. You will then be invited to indicate which modules you are interested in teaching. In addition, you will be asked to specify your availability by term and the number of hours you would like to teach.
A panel will review applications (that meet the essential criteria) with the aim of matching PGTAs to roles that support both personal and professional development, taking into account research interests, teaching preferences, and availability across each term. We are mindful of maintaining a balanced workload and do not wish to overburden PGTAs in a way that could limit their research time.
While we cannot guarantee assignment to specific modules or the exact number of hours requested, we will use the information you provide, alongside the number of available PGTA roles, to create meaningful and valuable teaching opportunities for successful applicants.
Our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
As London’s Global University, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation, and we want our community to represent the diversity of the world’s talent. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in UCL’s workforce. These include people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds; disabled people; LGBTQI+ people; and for our Grade 9 and 10 roles, women.
The Department is committed to the values of equality, diversity and inclusion and we have an active Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and networks for BME, LGBTQ, and disabled/neurodiverse staff and students. The Department recognises the importance of family-friendly working and we try, as far as possible, to organise meetings and events with staff responsibilities as parents and carers in mind. In 2022, the Department was awarded an Athena SWAN Silver award. Above all the Department aims to be a supportive environment for both its staff and students.
